Plot window "dies" with fontsize 14 when using an axis label with a superscript construct

Bug report for Octave 3.2.3 configured for i486-pc-linux-gnu

Description:
-----------

When I run the file attached, the plot window closes unexpectedly due
to the command on line 11. I can avoid this problem by not setting the
fontsize to 14 (13 & 15 are OK), or by avoiding the "^2" construct.
For example replacing line 11 with ylabel("y"), I see no problem.

Note that with the development sources (changeset 9779:2941c1daf509) I
observe the same problem.

I first reported this bug on the Debian bug tracking system
(http://bugs.debian.org/554191), but since I've now reproduced the
problem with the Octave development sources, I think it's appropriate
to report it as an Octave bug.

I can't duplicate this problem with 3.2.3 or the current sources, also
on a Debian system.

What version of gnuplot do you have?  I have 4.2.6.

If you'd like to debug further, I recommend trying the following:

  * run your plot function

  * execute the command

      drawnow ("x11", "/dev/null", 0, "debug.gp");

  * quit Octave

  * start gnuplot and execute the following command

      load "debug.gp"

Do you also see the same problem there?  If so, then the problemm is
likely a gnuplot bug.

Thanks very much for giving me that sequence of commands. I see the
problem with gnuplot alone as well. On line 25 of debug.gp (attached),
changing the fontsize from 14 to 13, the problem goes away. I have
filed a bug with Debian bug tracking system for gnuplot:
http://bugs.debian.org/554629
