Poison IvyAs long as I'm going down this Poison Ivy road, I'd like your collective thoughts on how to best treat poison ivy before a trip. My son gets it very badly and his allergist just puts him on oral prednisone and topical prednisone ointment (1%). I have seen some links about "oral ivy". Is the stuff any good, or is it just smoke and mirrors? Hiking with a large troop of scouts, it is nearly a given he will get cross contaminated in one way or another.

Re: Poison IvyMike, as far as I know, topical creams (such as Ivy Shield) are more effective than aerosol spray-ons for those of us who are moderately sensitive. The bad news is that for anyone extremely sensitive, applying creams before exposure isn't completely effective. The best defence is avoiding getting the oil on your skin.
I hike mostly on the west coast, and here our problem is poison oak, I've even pulled it out from my own back yard! In hiking through real infestations of poison oak I've not had reactions (while others in our group had serious problems after the hike) by wearing full head-to-toe raingear including gloves, through those areas and washing my outer garments afterwards with lots of detergent and hot water. Re: Poison IvyI just use cortisone 10 at the first itch. Of course, I'm not super
sensitive, just moderately so. I find the benadryl creams to have zero affect on my ivy rashes.
