Thank you so much! This procedure gave me the confidence I needed - working with GRASS .. I'm coming from an ESRI background and was fighting demons actually doing anything in GRASS.

I might mention I'm getting into GRASS through the 6.3 GUI .. I probably should get into the command line sooner than later.

Stefan and Joe,

I have tried one more software which enables polyline to polygon conversion in very effective manner.
Its Manifold system.
There s also ET tools (bindings available for ArcGIS)..it can also support polyline to polygon conversion..
But I have nt tried it..
The problem s they r proprietory..
But still Manifold was very good software..
Have a try if possible..
its least cost GIS package as of I know..
