The Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University, with funding from
the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is leading an interdisciplinary team to
find better ways to access, organize, and evaluate information about
jazz in recordings and on the Web. This project will explore ways to
adapt audio signal processing techniques developed in the Music
Information Retrieval field to jazz discography, with the aim of
identifying, comparing, and classifying digital audio files,
particularly those with poor descriptive metadata now proliferating on
the Internet.
We seek applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher who
will develop algorithms to model the audio of jazz recordings and to
interpret data about these recordings from multiple sources. The
successful candidate will begin in September 2012, or as soon as
possible thereafter; the project runs until the end of June 2014. The
project is a collaboration between the Center for Jazz Studies (CJS),
the Laboratory for the Recognition and Organization of Speech and Audio
(LabROSA), and the Computer Music Center (CMC), all at Columbia
University in the city of New York. The researcher will work closely
with and receive mentoring from Dan Ellis of LabROSA, Douglas Repetto of
the CMC, and Project Manager Tad Shull of the CJS.
We are looking for a candidate who holds a Ph.D. in electrical
engineering or computer science with expertise and experience in the
development and application of Music Information Retrieval techniques,
including signal processing and representation; machine learning and
pattern recognition; system evaluation and large archive management; and
music information in signals and metadata. Experience with jazz music
is a plus.
Interested applicants should send a CV, cover letter, and names of three
referees to:

by Friday, July 6th will be given priority.
