Statistical analyses to identify disease-causing genetic variants The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a world leader in genomic research and has played a major role in sequencing the human genome and characterising patterns of human sequence variation. Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow to join the Genetic Epidemiology Group at WTSI. The successful candidate will be involved in the design and analysis of large scale genomic epidemiological studies. Specifically, the successful candidate will be involved in developing statistical approaches to examine data generated by new DNA sequencing technologies, including analyses of sequence functionality and rare and common genetic variants in the context of complex diseases and traits. There is a strong commitment to personal and professional development with the group, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and build-up a strong academic profile. Essential Skills Applicants will have a numerate first degree (natural/biological sciences, maths or statistics) and a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have expertise in high throughput data manipulation, analysis and visualisation using relevant statistical packages (R) and programming languages (Perl or C). It is also essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly and the ability to work within a team. Ideal Skills Experience of analysis and handling large data sets, including genomic data, additional languages, and proficiency in the use of relational databases would be desirable. Familiarity with Linux network/server administration would also be an advantage. The post is a three year fixed-term contract.
