Hello everyone,

Just a reminder that SydPUG is on tonight at 6:30pm at Fujitsu
Australia in North Sydney.

Gavin Sherry will give a talk on data warehousing and business
intelligence: what it is, why it's important and why PostgreSQL users
should be interested in it.

He'll also look at some of the issues he has faced building petabyte
range data warehouses based on PostgreSQL, how they were addressed and
why they might be problems for you very soon.

Meet in the foyer of 15 Blue St North Sydney at 6:30pm. The meeting
will be held in the View Room on level 16. Call 0439594738 if you have
any trouble.

Free beer provided.
> Thanks andrew, that's helped but I've got some sort of encoding problem, and
> as I'm using gambas basic I didn't know how to interpret these lines:
>
>
>> use DBI ;
>> use DBD::Pg qw(:pg_types); #Required for us to use the *bytea* column
>>
>
>
> My gambas code goes something like this and I've selected the png file to load
> which has been passed to this routine as ImagePath.
>
> Public sub Save_Image(ImagePath as string)
>
>  Dim img As Image
>  Dim pictureData As String
>  Dim sql As String
>
> img = Image.Load(ImagePath) ' Save temp image as png file
>   tempFile = Temp() & ".png"
>   img.Save(tempFile)
>
>
>   pictureData = File.Load(tempFile) 'reload as a string
>
>
> At this point the pictureData string seems to be ok.
> I Then tried writing to the database:
>
>   sql = "insert into temp_image(piccie)"
>           "values($$"
>     sql = sql & pictureData & "$$)"
>
> and got back this message:
>
> Query failed:ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8":0x89 HINT: This
> error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encoding
> expected by the server, which is controlled by "client_encoding"
>
> Any idea's?

Hear your pain, this was all done on debian linux. binmode was a gotcha

I've done it with a bytea column like this

use DBI ;
use DBD::Pg qw(:pg_types); #Required for us to use the *bytea* column

reading in file from system (we need binmode here)

Hello everybody,

The Sydney PostgreSQL Users Group will meet on Wednesday, September 3rd,
at 6:30PM, at Fujitsu Australia in North Sydney.

Security restrictions
apply, so you will not be able to go straight up to the room. Please
call me on 0439 594 738 if there are any problems.

The building is next to the North Sydney train station exit on Blue St.

Free beer provided.

Thanks,

Digging through the net for a few days we couldn't find a solution,
only some hints for a similar problem hitting other clients (php
interpreter, for instance).

Here is a sample program which demonstrates the problem:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <sql.h>
#include <sqlext.h>
#include <string.h>

void extract_error(
      char *fn,
      SQLHANDLE handle,
      SQLSMALLINT type)
  {
    SQLINTEGER i = 0;
    SQLINTEGER native;
    SQLCHAR state[ 7 ];
    SQLCHAR text[256];
            "\n"
            "The driver reported the following diagnostics whilst

Due to a lot of other commitments, I haven't had the time to put together a
complete presentation for SydPUG, so there will be no meeting on for
tomorrow night.

There will be a SydPUG meeting next month. I can tentatively say that
the topic will be
an introduction to the Londiste replication system, part of Skype's
Skytools package (see
https://developer.skype.com/SkypeGarage/DbProjects/SkyTools). I will
be going over
basic configuration, giving a small demonstration and I'll also make
some comparisons
with other replication systems like Slony. Some background on the
other Skytools components will
also be included.

Hello everybody,

The Sydney PostgreSQL Users Group will meet on Tuesday, March 4th,
at 6:30PM, at Fujitsu Australia in North Sydney.

This talk was originally scheduled for last month.
Shoaib Mir will give a presentation on PostgreSQL monitoring and maintenance.
In addition to PgAgent, he will cover useful techniques for the care
and feeding of
PostgreSQL, including vacuuming, reindexing, recovering disk space,
analysing locks and
understanding vmstat output. These techniques will be demonstrated
from the command
line and from a graphical administration tool.

Meet in the foyer of 15 Blue St North Sydney at 6:30pm. The meeting
will be held in the View Room on level 16. Security restrictions
apply, so you will not be able to go straight up to the room. Please
call me on 0439 594 738 if there are any problems or questions.

The building is next to the North Sydney train station exit on Blue St.

If you think you will be attending, please drop me an email.

Thanks,

Charles Duffy
