My question is, I need to have power dns mysql backend and the powerdns also. Where do I get those as they are not available on the RedHat repository.

Authoritative Server.

PowerDNS Development & Community Server hosted at XS4ALL

Hi everybody,

Over the past few months, the PowerDNS Wiki and Subversion servers had a
hard time and were no longer able to keep up with the growing amounts of
traffic. Since these servers also routed my personal email, I had little
choice but move the flood of spam to gmail. But no more!

We acquired a lovely Dell PowerEdge R200, and found pioneering PowerDNS user
XS4ALL willing to host it! This explains the xs4all logos on
wiki.powerdns.com and svn.powerdns.com ;-)

XS4ALL is what I'd like to call an 'old school internet service provider' -
which is quite literally true since they were (almost) the first here in The
Netherlands. Racking up xs.powerdns.com went without a hitch. For some
reason, whenever I have to rack up a server, it turns out the wrong rails
have been agreed upon, or the power is wrong or too much, or the IP
addresses have not been arranged.

But this time round, we were done in 5 minutes. When I discovered a few days
later that no IPv6 was provisioned, this was fixed within an hour. On
Sunday.

XS4ALL also was the 'launching customer' of the PowerDNS Recursor, funding
the development process and field testing it.

So many thanks to them for hosting xs.powerdns.com!

Powerdns and qmail CNAME lookup error

Hello, I am currently running into issues with powerdns and qmail. Running 'ANY' queries is returning no results which seems to be causing issues with qmail servers (yahoo.com specifically). When qmail attempts to query the server before sending email, a CNAME error is being returned to the sender (see below):

I ran into this same issue a few months back and the solution at the time was to remove the 'IN A' wildcard record that I previously had in place. Everything was fine for about two weeks and now... same error.

As there are no CNAME records for the domain in question, we are receiving email from non-qmail servers, and it's not likely that yahoo will patch their qmail, I am at a loss and looking to you for help.

Please let me know what else I can do to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

I got ahold of gcc4 from Blastwave, installed it, placed it in my path and ran the following (for the recursor):

# CXXFLAGS=-I/opt/boost/boost_1_40_0 ./configure

Attached is the error, it doesn't seem to even compile now.

For the authoritative server, looks like it runs into similar problems, I've attached the errors from ./configure and from gmake.

You mentioned you have a Sun Fire T000.
Any chance you could provide the exact environment and syntax used to compile and install the aforementioned packages?

We too have a Solaris 5.10 Sun Fire T1000 (kindly donated by Sun!).
However, we find that compiling using gcc/g++ 3.3 does not generate
binaries that perform too well (or even work at all). The warning
about -pthread being unknown is a stront hint.

If you could avail yourself of a newer gcc, it is likely that the
authoritative server will compile and work too.

LDAP Timeout

Greetings,

I'm using the LDAP backend with the following versions:
- PDNS: 2.9.21.2
- OS: Debian Lenny

If I start up PowerDNS, names can be resolved via LDAP, however after 60 seconds, names can no longer be resolved, the resulting error in the Log:

pdns[5141]: [LdapBackend] Search failed: Timeout
pdns[5141]: Database module reported condition which prevented lookup (LDAP server timeout) sending out servfail

You may think it's an LDAP issue, however I have another instance running on a different machine with no issues.

If you create a zone and declare yourself authorative for it then you
take over that zone and a recursor will not solve that.

It definitly not something I would recommend a start to do at all.

Either you copy the original zone information and add your own entries
into it everytime you update your copy. (Which is rather a pain.)

Or you create the zone and then setup the four hosts you want to add and
setup a wildcard NS record pointing to the original nameserver(s).

Something like:

stealthis.example.net A 192.0.2.10
stealthat.example.net A 192.0.2.11
thisto.example.net A 192.0.2.12
final.example.net A 192.0.2.13
*.example.net NS originalzone.ns

Robert,

The suggestion is to not compile the recursor from the authoritative
tarball - this is not supported!

So remove --enable-recursor, and things should be fine.

Replying to my own post - I looked at Slony, and it's way to heavy for
what I need. It requires very high database privilege level on both
sides, and I don't want to compromise database security for reason as
silly as sec DNS updates ;) Time to do something custom.

Both isc-dhcpd and PDNS has LDAP data backend(isc-dhcpd
needs some patches) support. I'm not sure that it will works, but you
can try modify pdns querys to work it with isc-dhcpd.

Dynamic DNS support in PowerDNS?

Hi,

Does PowerDNS support dynamic DNS updates from DHCP? I would like to use PowerDNS on my LAN to supply forward and reverse mapping for all connected clients. If possible, could someone point me to the right documentation? if not, are there known work-arounds available?

I am currently using Debian 5.0 (Etch) with the default Debian packages pdns-server (PowerDNS 2.9.21.2) and dhcp3-server (ISC DHCP Server v3.1.1).

I had some idea as well - make a python or perl script listening on a
socket (or spawned from inetd). Client side would connect and send last
update time (or counter, whatever), server would answer with set of
changed data, which the client would import into its local database. All
cron'ed.

Basically, there are many solutions, and none of theme is rocket
science, but I just don't want to reinvent the wheel. I'm probably going
to try PostgreSQL + Slony, simply because it is just ready and needs
configuring only. And because I've never used Slony before :)

I am using MySQL for both my master and my slave. I played with MySQL replication some but it just seemed over-kill for what I needed (I have a huge MySQL replicated environment for my web stuff). I ended up just writing a simple script on the master that would do a mysqldump. It would keep track of the checksum of the last dump and if it changed it would scp that mysqldump to the slave and restore it.

Runs every minute from cron...works great. Ghetto -- but simple and trouble-free :)

In short, it doesn't. If the packet should get lost before the slave has
the zone in its database it won't get retried until a 'pdns_control
notify <domain>' is issued on the master.

No really, try other schema's if you can. Let me explain you our pdns
setup.

We have one master database that contains all profiles. From that db,
a script generates the actual zones every 10 minutes. These are stored
in the PDNS Master database on our primary nameserver, using the MySQL
backend.

NS2 and NS3 use MySQL replication to replicate that master DB.

This means that if a new zone is added and committed to the NS1 PDNS
Master MySQL db, it is automatically available on NS2 and NS3. No need
to configure anything on ns2/ns3, no need for AXFR, etc.

For customers that run BIND, we use the "supermaster" functionality as
follows.

Primary BIND of the customer (CUST-NS) configures the zone, and
notifies our NS1. Our NS1 gets the NOTIFY, sees that it doesn't know
anything about the zone, sees that CUST-NS is a configured
supermaster, and it will AXFR the zone from CUST-NS and commit it to
it's own master MySQL db. Again, MySQL replication takes care of
distributing the zone to NS2 and NS3.

situation when I add a whole new zone to the master server, and I'd like
the slave server to add it automatically as well. The zone is not yet
configured on the slave, so it will not ask for that. It only asks when
notified by master. So the only way to make it reliable, I suppose, is
to repeat the notifications form master, until a successful AXFR to
slave occurs.

the patch. The way SQLite implements tables make the normal zone
AXFR transfer process reasonably performant. It was PostgreSQL's
multi-version concurrancy that killed the performance when using
a PostgreSQL backend.
