Preferred X86-64 Linux Distribution for Glassfish

Hi.

I was using Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) on a X86-64 cloud server, but found it impossible to install the required Sun JDK 5.x for this 64 bit platform, and - consequenty - I was not able to install Glassfish V3.

Does anyone have experience with installing and running Glassfish V3 under a X86-64 Linux distribution? I am rebuilding my server and I have a choice of setting up one of the following:

Arch 2009.02
CentOS 5.2
CentOS 5,3
Debian 5.0 (lenny)
Fedora 10 (Cambridge)
Fedora 11 (Leonidas)
Gentoo 2008,0
Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS (hardy)
Ubuntu 8.19 (intrepid)
Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty)

Any recommendations?

Links to step-by-step tutorials for setting up Java and Glassfish under X86-64 on one or several of these platforms?

Any advice and pointers would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.
Elan

I've never had a problem installing a JDK on any Linux platform.
What errors did you have? And why JDK 5 anyway?

Currently running GF v3 on various Red Hat Enterprise clones with
JDK 6, no problems.

Hi,

You should be fine with Ubuntu 9.04; I run it on a desktop with the
sun-java-6 vm.
Just apt-get sun-java-6 (iirc)

Also, you can use Redhat Enterprise / CentOS, which works like a charm
for me and has been for the past years.

Barry

Aha.

I'll give it a shot.

Maybe the problem was that I was consulting with aged howto's on the Internet.

Thanks.

Hi.

On an X86-64 Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty system I am trying to install java jdk, to be able to run glassfish.

apt-get install sun-java6-jdk

1. Running apt-get install I get the following error:
E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate

2. Incidentally, apt-get update says:

3. Maybe I'm missing some repository? If so, how do I add the missing repository?

4. I'd much appreciate some advice.

1. Running apt-get I get the following error:
apt-get install sun-java6-jdk
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package sun-java6-jdk is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate

2. Incidentally, apt-get update says:

To answer my own question, it appears that I had to add "multiverse" to the repository list. Now it did install fine. I still have to test it, but I'm happy that at least it did install. Cool.
