that for selection we make an explicit distinction among curves, edges,
faces, patches, and "generic" surfaces (e.g. quadrics, teapots, other
more arcane stuff). I've added support for selection of polygon
vertices, which is distinct from selecting polygon edges, even though
their cardinality is the same - this was a longstanding request from
awhile back. Note the new set of selection buttons in the main toolbar.
