Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsI have seen a lot of unrelated discussion about Blue Cards including
PDF's for them and it seems that TM cannot print on the MB Pocket cards available from the scout store. Is there a PDF available to print these cards like the multiple links posted for the blue cards? |

Re: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsI would think that it would be possible to set up a Word template, with some
time, and a lot of measuring, probably by using the Labels feature in Word. Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsFrom what I can tell, there is no way to get TM to export the data
necessary to create (print) the merit badge award cards. It will only send the data directly to the printer in order to print the labels. Now, if someone could tell me how to export the label data, I can easily do the formatting and merge to word to print it on the sheets of Merit Badge cards available from the Scout store. I have no idea why the thread keeps getting jumbled with conversation about blue cards. This really has nothing to do with printing blue cards. --- In TMTUG@..., Katherine Fritz <redshoes@...> wrote: > > I would think that it would be possible to set up a Word template, with some > time, and a lot of measuring, probably by using the Labels feature in Word. > > Katie > > On Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 12:50 PM, simitroop303 <SimiTroop303@...> wrote: > > > I have seen a lot of unrelated discussion about Blue Cards including > > PDF's for them and it seems that TM cannot print on the MB Pocket cards > > available from the scout store. > > > > Is there a PDF available to print these cards like the multiple links > > posted for the blue cards? > > > |

Re: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsIn this particular instance, I was not talking about blue cards, but about
award cards. I was suggesting that it seems to be that it would be possible to create a template in Microsoft Word using Word's Labels feature to print award cards. I could see that being useful for small numbers of the cards, but that doesn't address what you're talking about, which essentially is a mail merge feature. How to get the data out of TM to do this? No way to do it directly to a CSV file or Excel spreadsheet that I'm aware of. But you could accomplish this in a workaround manner by telling TM to print labels, and when it previews the labels, tell TM to save it to disk in RTF format. You could then open that file in Word, select all (CTRL-A), then copy (CTRL-C) -- then open Microsoft Excel, Paste special, and tell Excel to Paste unformatted text -- this will give you the text in rows and columns, and with some editing, you could create a mail merge file. But you'd then need to create a Word template formatted to print on the award cards. Yes, I realize this is a PITA but it's the best I can come up with at the moment if you wish to print on the BSA award cards. I'm sure this could be programmed into TM if enough people requested it, but who knows if it's on the wishlist, or if it is, where it is on the priority list. I would have thought someone would have created some kind of template, Word or PDF, to print on the BSA 8-up award cards, but didn't find anything when I did a Google search. RE: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsRespectfully, WRONG!
On the Reports-->Awards/Advancement-->Court of Honor/4403. panel: Notice the "Create tab delimited export file" in the "Select Report"/"Court of Honor" entries. If you check that, you will get a file generated, that ends in ".txt". This is really a tab delimited file that can be imported into Excel. If you want, when you are prompted for a file name, name it with a ".csv" suffix and Excel will know what to do with it. Then, in Excel, use Data-->Import External Data-->Import Data and drill down to where you saved the file and, if you named it with a ".csv" extension, Excel will present it to you. Click on it and Excel will ask you where you want it put. Etc. Once you have this into Excel, you should be able to Mail Merge it into what ever tool you want to use to produce the final document. Give this a try and see if it's what you are looking for. Let me know one way or the other. Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsHi everyone,
Sorry to be late in the game with this discussion. The tab delimited/Excel/mail merge setup is what I have been doing for over a year. I use Wordperfect for my mail merge, but Word will work fine I'm sure. The hardest part was setting up a custom label, but after the initial setup, it's pretty quick every CoH. I still like doing the handwritten cards for old time's sake, but with some post-summercamp 120+ MB awards, electronic time saving has pressed it's way into our life :-) Rob ASM, T-667 |

Another option is to get images from http://www.scouting.org/media/identity/12.aspx but they don't have the Palms or a MB image... -- Tim |

RE: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsThanks to Chuck Hardee, I was able to import a .csv into a Publisher
template I created to print the 8-up cards sold at the Scout store. I love the results, but wonder if the extra steps are going to be worth it. Here's what I learned: - The top row of cards are ever so slightly longer than the second row. So, either the wording is high on the top row or low on the bottom row. You have to decide with which you are happier. - The .csv spits out the names as lastname, firstname, so you need to split the name field and then concatenate them if you want them firstname, lastname. - The .csv is sorted by name and includes all the awards a scout or adult has earned before moving onto the next person. You need to re-sort the .csv so all the MBs are together, ranks are together, etc., since there are different cards for rank vs merit badges vs service stars. I have only created a template so far for the merit badges. - I ended up with 6 unused cards on my last printed page. I don't know if I'll be able to run the sheet through again with 2 cards missing from it, so I foresee a bunch of partially-used sheets of MB cards. Those are the most obvious problems/concerns I've seen so far. If anyone can see a way around some of these, I'd love to hear them. RE: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsI have been following the discussion on "printing the merit badge cards."
Now I have to ask, "WHY?" It's up to the youth to put their name on the card along with the other information. The SM or his designee signs the card and the Scout and his buddy go and earn it. Maybe I missed something. It's the Scout's job to write the info on the card! Not yours or TM's. Tim |

RE: Re: Printing Merit Badge CardsWe are talking about the awards card the Scout receives at the Court of
Honor with his rank, merit badge or service star, NOT the blue card. Beth Buckley Advancements Chair Troop 219 <mailto:Dizneykids@...> Dizneykids@...
