Printing issue - Fedora 11

Hi All,

I am using freenx-server-0.7.3-15 on Fedora 11 and NXclient 3.3.0.6.
Everything is working fine except client side printing.

CUPS version is 1.4.0. So i have followed the NoMachine knowledge base:
http://www.nomachine.com/ar/view.php?ar_id=AR08G00538

But I didn't see the client side printer on NX session. Every time when
login, xmessage asks driver configuration.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks
Vivek

That's normal. You can select to keep the previously selected driver.

Are you using a windows client ??

Can you see a USER's cups daemon running from the nx session on the server??

If the user's cups daemon is starting, then you need to check if the X session is using that one instead of the system one.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your reply and Sorry for the very late reply...

Now I am trying this in the Fedora 8. My setup is like

FreeNX - freenx-server-0.7.3-11.fc8
Cups server - cups-1.3.9-2.fc8
Client - Windows - nomachine client. windows machine has a shared
network printer ( name - HPLaser ).

In the nx session (gnome), i do not see the windows printer. But i put
'ps -ef | grep cups', two cups process running under session user(vivek)
and it uses /home/vivek.nx/cups/cupsd.conf file.

In the system->Administrator->Printing, i select the 'Goto server'
option and connect to '/home/vivek/.nx/C-vivek-**/cups/cupsd.sock', It
showed the windows printer(HPLaser). But applications are not showing
the windows printer.

Please give some inputs for debugging this.

Thanks,
Vivek

The safest way is to put the directive

ServerName /home/vivek/.nx/C-vivek-**/cups/cupsd.sock

into ~/.cups/client.conf

You may well find that you need to restart some applications like OpenOffice after changing to the user cupsd.

Firefox seems to check when you select print, but OpenOffice seems to check once on startup.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your reply.

I have put the directive in to ~/.cups/client.conf file. Now all the
applications shows the windows printer.

But we are not able to print. In the
'/home/vivek/.nx/C-vivek-**/cups/log/error_log', it repeats the
following message.

Unable to connect to CIFS host, will retry in 60 seconds...

Please share your views..

Thanks
Vivek

Well it's getting that far then.

There can be a few issues with this error.

I'll have to have a look.

Do you have any firewalling on the windows/samba host preventing connections from localhost.

If you have XP sp3 and connect via a modem ( or 3G cellphone broadband ) then windows shuts off networking to save you from yourself, so you have to bring up a LAN port to print or map a drive.

Try mapping a shared drive.

This will tell us if the tunnel is working and you have your passwords correct for the settings in the nx client.

Chris,

I have changed SAMBA_MOUNT_SHARE_PROTOCOL="smbfs".  Now printing is
working fine ( Fedora 8). Thanks for your great help....

In Fedora 11, if we use default cupsd ( cups version 1.4), no cupsd
process running under my NX session. But we saw cupsd process when we
downgraded the cups version to 1.2. So I assume problem is with cupsd
1.4 version.

Normal printing was working fine with cupsd 1.4.

I have added my user name into systemgroup in cupsd.conf.
"SystemGroup sys root vivek"

Please guide me, how to configure cupsd 1.4 for printing.

Thanks
Vivek

Windows Samba smb/cifs printing has had a few issues, mainly I think because hardly anyone uses it.

Most of it was fixed last year, especially the samba smbspool cifs redirection issue, but there are still a few bugs outstanding which I fixed for myself in version 7.1

I'm usually way behind everyone else, so by the time I've got round to looking at a problem, the developers and testers have fixed it and released a new version.

Most of these found there way into 7.2 and 7.3 so I need to catch up . . . .

Hi Chris,

After changing the file permission of cups related binaries now printing
is working fine on Fedora 11.

Now i just curious to know how printing works.  I saw only one tcp
connection established between server and client. But how printing
works.................

I am a new one for cups and SSH tunneling related things... If you have
time please explain with some simple examples.

That it would be great help for us.

Thanks
Vivek

If you have time, please write a howto for this on the FreeNX Wiki to
help others that might want to have this working on Fedora (and other distros)
as well. :-)

If you haven't registered, please do so and wait about 24 hours for the
account to be activated.

lad it is sorted, but did you try authorizations.
(System-Preferences-Authorizations). There is a Cups section. For me to
access scanners I needed to allow console connections under the
appropriate device.

Hello Chris,

cups version - 1.4 (cups-1.4-0.rc1.15.fc11.i586)

I had created a group and added it in to cupsd.conf file. (SystemGroup).
But it did not work me. After i had changed the permission of cups
binaries ( like cupsd, lp, ...) to 755.

selinux = disabled

Thanks
Vivek

They ought to be that anyway. What use is lp if no-one but root can execute it.

Maybe redhat think otherwise !! but sounds like a booboo to me !!

That's a bit of a different issue.
The /dev/whatever for scanners were often root only in some distros till recently.

I notice mine is now group lp with rw so I don't have to change it anymore . . . .

The cups binaries should all be o+rx  . . .

Chris,

Thanks for explaining this..

If you have time, please explain about printing functionality for end user like me. I am willing to know that. I am trying to understand the thread "how printer works". But it looks difficult for me.

Thanks
Vivek

That's a bit of a different issue.
The /dev/whatever for scanners were often root only in some distros till recently.

I notice mine is now group lp with rw so I don't have to change it anymore . . . .

The cups binaries should all be o+rx  . . .

cups has moved on a bit since FreeNX last looked at it.

I have a few fixes for some issues, so I'll sort those out first.

I'd have done it before, but I don't think many people print to windows over
the ssh tunnel and usually there is a new release before I get round to fixing anything myself . .

A lot of the wiki stuff is a few years old too, so I'll have a look at that afterwards.

It all takes time though . . .

My thought was that to scan in a console/freenx I needed to allow access
in authorization.

It would follow if printing is working OK on the local pc then changing
the authorization of cups to allow consoles would do the same in freenx.

Just a thought.

Hi Chris,

I would be interested to know about this too. And, may be I can help fix any issues and send out patches, if that will help.

I have tried this FreeNX/SMB printing over SSH tunnel several times before. I did get it working in one setup. But I am unable to replicate the same again to a second FreeNX server for some reason.
