what database does your hibernate.properties point to. If the
sportletuserimpl table is empty then it should prompt you to setup the
initial root user.
Also, you might want to download tomcat version 5.5.26 or lower and
replace the jars in the TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib jars in your 2.2.27
installation with the 2.2.26 versions.
Just in case you have issues with the jsp interpreter.

but when i start the gridsphere portal and try to login with the
username and password that i set up on the first time i ran it, it
gives me the message "user doesn't exist:"
when i use the option "forgot my password" then it prompts me that
i'll soon be receiving an email with the password update information,
but i don't get any emails.
