Problem with $ character

I have a problem with messages that have a $.

This is the command:
# echo "this is a $ symbol" | gnokii --sendsms 2627500000
# Send succeeded with reference 202!

But in my cellphone the message says:
this is a ¿ symbol

Any ideas about this problem?
