Problems with Custom oAW Install

by Todd Ferrell :: Rate this Message:

I consult for a large corporation where I'm trying to get other developers excited about oAW and xText, but this may be difficult,  so I decided to make the install as easy as possible by creating my own custom eclipse installation based on eclipse oAW 4.3.1.  It also contains sculptor, some custom xpand templates and a custom plug-in (ecore model and editor).  I zipped it up, burned it to disk and installed it on a colleague's laptop.  On their machine, I can run workflows from ant, but the oAW plug-in isn't initializing.   None of the oAW plug-in features are available and the eclipse icon doesn't display on the window title bar.  I realize this is a long shot, but if anyone has any suggestions or tips for debugging this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello Todd,

are you using a windows machine?
Maybe there are problems with some pathes?
Extract the eclipse in the root of the partrion.
If you are using the home folder, maybe spaces or to long pathes will cause some errors.

Darius

Hi Todd,

- Be sure that Eclipse starts at least with Java 5 (check configuration)
- Any logs in the error view?
- In which state are the bundles (Plugin Registry View, Configuration
Details)?

I'm running on Windows, but the install path is the same, so that shouldn't be an issue and the workflows will run from ant, so the plug-ins are there, they just don't seem to be initializing properly.  I haven't had a chance to actually debug this from my co-workers machine, but I'll do that today and these are great suggestions.  I'll post back with what I find out.

If not, try full sculptor Installation and Hello world tutorial. This
is know to work on windows.

http://fornax.itemis.de/confluence/display/fornax/1.+Installation+Guide+%28CSC%29
http://fornax.itemis.de/confluence/display/fornax/2.+Hello+World+Tutorial+%28CSC%29

Than you should try to strip it down to oAW.

It was the Java version.  This was in the instructions, but the developer didn't check it.  I feel silly for posting such a simple problem, but the good news is that everything else worked perfectly, so a new or existing developer can now be fully installed and configured in about 15 mins.  Thanks for the helpful replies.

You have to behave like Dr. House. Don't trust people, double check
and ALWAYS start with: Is your power cord plugged ... :-).
Don't feel silly, it's nature of human being.
