Hello everyone,

I am very excited to announce that Profile2 v1.0 has been officially
released!

Profile2 is a complete re-design and re-development of the existing
Profile tool in Sakai. It gives you more of a Facebook style interface
for editing your profile. In addition you have a comprehensive set of
Privacy controls to allow you to choose who can see what part(s) of
your Profile.

With Profile2 you can post status updates, search for people by name
and common interests, view their profiles, view their friends, add
them as friends, and much more.

Profile2 can be run seamlessly alongside the existing profile in Sakai
to allow you to evaluate both profile tools. If you've never used the
Profile tool in Sakai before, now is the time to start!

View this space in Confluence for screenshots, instructions on where
to get the source, how to build it and how to configure it:
http://confluence.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/PROFILE/Profile2

A migration utility is included which allows you to convert existing
Profiles into Profile2 profiles.

Many more features are planned for future releases of Profile2, and
you can keep track of progress on both the Confluence space and in
Profile2's Jira space:
http://jira.sakaiproject.org/jira/browse/PRFL

If you have any comments or questions, please send them along.

cheers,
Steve

How will profile 2 sit with sakai 3, will it be ported or will Sakai 3 use
the original profile tool?

Will profile 2 replace the original profile in 2.7?

We wouldn't want to migrate and later regret our decision.

Hi Adam,

I've had discussions with the K2 group about incorporating the
services of Profile2 into Sakai3 although the UI will be different in
Sakai3 (as will all others as well).

I am hoping that Profile2 can be included in Sakai 2.7, as there are
heaps of new features that give it an edge and its much more Web 2.0
focused.

This will require a number of institutions adopting it so please give
it a go. It's being worked on heavily at the moment and you can track
its progress via the Confluence space below:
http://confluence.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/PROFILE/Profile2

We are also developing a number of complementary tools around the new
features in Profile2.

As a side note, I've just added an integration between the status
updates you can post in Profile2 and Twitter.

cheers,
Steve

From the outside Profile 2 looks good. To get it into 2.7 we'll need
to see some evidence that its working in production settings, of
course, and for schools to use it they will want to understand what,
if any, functionality might have been lost.   And, of course, we'd
want to know that more than a couple organizations are interested in
this.  Even so, this is probably one of those cases where we would
ship 2 profile tools with a release, one stealthed.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the information. I'm currently in the process of enhancing
the Profile2 API to provide 100% backwards compatibility with tools
that currently use the existing Profile API (eg Roster). This will
mean that any tool that makes use of the current Profile API, nothing
needs to change at all, they will get it all for free. No
functionality will be lost at all, on the contrary, much is to be
gained (see the Profile2 Confluence space). I will announce when this
work is complete (should be very soon).

If anyone has any tools that depend on the current Profile API I'd
like to know about them so I can include them in my porting and
testing schedule. Even if in contrib.

cheers,
Steve

You should look at this page for Provisional tool criteria:

http://bugs.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/SCP/Criteria+for+Provisional+Status

It looks like you have a new SakaiPerson service as well.  New UI
layers are one thing, but I'd feel better if we had a single
underlying service. Is there a reason your changes to the service
can't be merged into the existing one? Or am I misunderstanding?

Hi Michael,

The SakaiPerson service has just been extended to add a few more
fields. It's fully backwards compatible. In addition, that service is
contained in the current Profile tool so I wouldn't necessarily
consider it a general Sakai service per se, more of an additional
service that supports the Profile backend. As far as I can tel,
nothing else except the Profile uses it. It didn't contain the
required fields so I had to extend it.

In addition, I posted to the lists in September/October 2008 asking if
anyone was using the Profile/SakaiPerson API's directly and if they
could see any issue in my implementation details. I received a few
responses but nothing that signified it would be an issue. The
additions to SakaiPerson have been logged in a Jira ticket for some
time now, I just haven't had a chance to commit them to trunk yet.
Once that is done there will be no dependency on an updated
SakaiPerson, except for people running older versions of Sakai.

Noting the requirements on the provisional tool list, Profile2 meets
all of the Technical elements, all of the UI elements and with the
compatibility work I am currently doing and soon to be released, all
of the desirable elements as well. I built Profile2 with that
requirement list in mind :)

cheers,
Steve
