We have found a workaround for this problem with Woodstock causing security message in IE "this page contains both secure and insecure items" when working under HTTPS. We posted an article how to solve it on our dev blog. Hope that works for you too.

We have solved the Visual JSF(Woodstock) issue when running it under HTTPS and IE 7 by following the steps described in the MentorMate development forum. Worked out well and now we don't have those annoying security message popup. See the link below

The issue is not the test harness, but the complexity of the component you are trying to test.
The table is complex and feature rich. The only way to accurately test using any test harness
is to understand the implementation, either at the server or the client.

On the client this means knowing the HTML elements and javascript that is used to
implement the component.

For the woodstock components this can get complicated because there is alot of client side
javascript(including ajax) involved as well as Java api's on the server.

$ as a folder substitute ?

Hi,

If a user create a new jsp page under a new folder, the folder "/"
required to change to another Character.

Woodstock using $ instead of "/" as folder substitute, it works, but
seem a bit of confusing with it.

for example:
value="#{myFolder$Page1.selectOneMenu1Bean.selectedObject}"

Is any other character has been known in EL for folder substitute?

Yes, Here is the answer if you are using woodstock 4.0 and netbeans 5.5.
You must set the locales you want to support in both
faces_config.xml
<application>
<locale-config>
<supported-locale>en</supported-locale>
<supported-locale>de</supported-locale>
</locale-config>
</application>

and web.xml
<context-param>
<param-name>com.sun.webui.theme.SUPPORTED_LOCALES</param-name>
<param-value>en,de</param-value>
</context-param>

With this, when you set your language to german or english in your browser, the web app shows either localized version

You're right, its not a good way to do this ;)

If this is for your private web app and not a change to the Woodstock
code, then
that's different but if you plan on changing woodstock then I would
suggest you not do that.

But given that the code has "JSFThemeContext" means that you should not
have to
do this at all. There is something else going on that is not allowing
the browser
locale to control the locale of the components.

Note that in order for the locale to change, a request for the whole
page must be
made. It cannot be an ajax request for a single component, in case you
are using
ajax in your page.

Also make sure you are satisfying all the JSF requirements of listing the
supported locales in the faces config file.

I'm not sure but if this is an early version of woodstock then there was
a bug
where supported locales must be listed in the web.xml of the web app.
I can't remember when that was fixed, but it was in a version when
the "JSFThemeContext" came into being. This new theme code eliminated
the need for supported locales to be listed in web.xm of the web app
but in the early release of it, I think there was a bug.

The real answer is to upgrade to the later version of the components.

The link you gave me gave me an idea. It may be a bad idea but it works.
If I use the following code the page renders with the new locale information even for the
woodstock components. It is not automatic but at least I can bind it to a choose locale button, and
work from there.

Yes.
Each jar has a manifest.
If you jar xf webui-jsf.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
and dump the MANIFEST.MF you will see a version designation.
And likewise for the theme jar webui-jsf-suntheme.jar (I think).

As far as I remember since JSF 1.2 (after they fixed their localization problems)
the browser locale always controlled the locale of the components.

Before 1.2 there was JSF bug where in some cases (based on server or client state mode)
you had to restart the webapp.

Now if you are working in the IDE there are other issues involved with the design
surface and locale, and those I never understood.

I just ran a test on netbeans 6.1 and you are correct the localization is controlled by browser locale just the way
I would like.

Problem is we couldn't switch to new netbeans and woodstock because performance was so poor. Is there

Now the gotcha...

Depending on which version of woodstock you are using you have to

Problems with MySQL-Database-connection with a Visual Web JSF Portlet Page

Hello everybody,

I have a problem with my Netbeans-project. My English is not that good, but I will try to explain it detailed.

I have a Web-application (Server: OpenPortal Portlet Container) without Frameworks. I added a ‚Visual Web JSF Portlet Page‘ View.jsp.
I want to use a Woodstock-component–table und I want to fill it with data from a MySQL-database. I work with Netbeans.

My problem is, that the table in the portlet is shown with the right column-names, but the data in the fields isn’t there.

My strategy:

1. New Web-application (Server: OpenPortal Portlet Container) without Frameworks. I added a ‚Visual Web JSF Portlet Page‘ View.jsp.

2. Right klick on the Projekt – New – Other – Glassfish -- JDBC Resource -- Create new JDBC Resource , I retained all presettings, I only picked the database (‚Extract from Existing Connection‘)

I clicked OK and the sun-resources.xml was created:

6. Then right click at the table, I picked ‚Table Layout‘ from the appearance list and then I picked the ‚termineDataProvider‘ from the dropdownlist. Now the columnnames of the MySQL-table are shown in the table in the Design-view of View.jsp.

When I start the Project, the Portlet is shown in the OpenPortal Portlet Container and the right columnnames are also displayed, but the table-fields don’t show up and there is written: “no Elements found”

I tried exactly the same with the Glassfish-Server and a “Visual Web JSF Page” (no Portlet Page) and it works fine, all data is shown in the table.

I also tried exactly the same with the Tomcat-Server and a “Visual Web JSF Page”, but there I had to add following code in the context.xml, otherwise the table isn’t shown at all:

I recognized that before I added the code in the context.xml, in the Projects-Window (in Netbeans) under ‚Data Source References‘ the ‚kalender_MySQL‘ is shown, but when I open the properties, the URL is emty.

Only when I add the code in the context.xml, the URL-property is there: ‚jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/kalender‘. When I use Glassfish, the URL is in the properties immediately after I do the steps 1 to 6.

In the project with the OpenPortal Portlet Container the URL isn’t shown in the properties of ‚ kalender_MySQL‘ in the ‘Data Source References‘ at all.

Have anybody any idea what I do wrong? Thanks a lot!

ok, i will tinker with the build file to suppress just that part, as I would really like to have the example built and locally
deployed in order to compare behaviours from my own code.

there is a certain amount - a lot - of confusion in my tiny little head at the moment. I can see that the Giant Ant Script That
Builds Everything constructed some large JAR files in master/build (Woodstock4.3*jar and Woodstock_DependentLibs.4.3*jar) as well 28
smaller jars under master/build/ship/lib - I guess the big JARs contain the little jars?

What I'm trying to do is get to the point where I have the source code available for use in my Netbeans 6.1 VisualWeb JSF projects
so that I can debug, and hopefully fix, a show-stopping problem with AddRemoveList. What is now further complicating this picture is
that the bunch of library jars that Netbeans calls "woodstock" do not correspond particularly to the set in master/build/ship/lib

I'm tentatively guessing that the projects under ide-plugins build the NBM that get plugged into Netbeans, but they don't get built
by the master script as far as I can see, and there's not a lot of doco on what is where in this sprawling great project.

Sounds like the VM you are using doesn't support that compile option,
which is used
to generate 1.5 class files.

If you don't care about this, remove the option.

Also this step is only done to verify that the JSP files compile. This
step can be removed.
You will probably have to go to the ant build file (probably the
"example" directory)
and comment out the compile of the JSP files.
If it is the netbeans build file that is executing the task there are
usually properties you
can set to prevent the build from compiling the JSP files.

compiling woodstock

I have attempted to build woodstock both from the command line via ant, and via the Netbeans projects using Netbeans 6.1, and in
both cases failed. This may reflect problems with 4.3 build 7, so I will attempt the same with 4.3 build 6. I am trying to build
against both a 1.5 JDK and a 1.6 JDK. Yes, I've followed the instructions at <https://woodstock.dev.java.net/BuildYourself.htm>.

In order to build against the 1.5 JDK (this is under Ubuntu, by the way, in case "build once, run anywhere" is no longer true) by
doing the following from a little shell script

export JAVA_HOME=/var/opt/java/jdk1.5.0_16
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
ant -f master/build.xml

to build against the 1.6 JDK I just ran ant from the command line, with JAVA_HOME pointing at my 1.6 JDK. In both cases the ant

It looks like the _init() method of Page.java(Page java file) is not getting called in Portlet environment. And user_DataProvider.setCachedRowSet() is called in _init() to set the CachedRowSet for the dataprovider. That's why you are not able to see any data.

Try calling _init() inside constructor of the Page.java.
Also make sure you have added the jdbc datasource properly in your application server.

I tried calling _init() from the constructor of Page.java and it worked for me.

To me it looks like a bug in jsfportletbridge.

Hi Antonio,

It's been suggested that you first try obtaining data directly from a backing bean (i.e., take the table component out of the equation). If you can get the Liferay/mysql connection to work, then try adding database support to the table.

Woodstock Portlet

Are you talking the text that is set on the "title" html attribute ?

These should be defined in the "messages.properties" file.
The values of the "alt" html property for images may be defined in
"images.properties" but
most (if not all) localizable text should be defined in
"messages.properties".

How to create new locale properties files and config files for locale gl_ES like locale es.

Hello.

I am using de sources and compiling them to create new localization files.
I have copied, I think, all *es.properties and saved them as *gl_ES.properties.
I also modified de build script because failed at update verification step.

I am thinking that there are more files to modify but I do not know them.

The result is almost ok, localization for component table works ok, but not for accordion, where the icons legends appears in english.

Is there any instuctions about this process.

Does any body knows how to do this task.

I would appreciate any help.

I've resolved this. The object type returned by getAsObject() in the
converter was not compatible with Oracle.
Oracle JDBC APIs should be used.

I'm afraid the stack trace in that report does not indicate to me that
Woodstock component
is the issue. There seems to be some serialization issue with container
session.

at java.io.ObjectInputStream.<init>(ObjectInputStream.java:277)
at org.apache.catalina.session.StandardManager.doLoad(StandardManager.java:428)
at org.apache.catalina.session.StandardManager.load(StandardManager.java:372)

Make sure that any ManagedBeans like SessionBeans can be serialized and
resurrected correctly
after being serialized. One sanity check my be to turn off session
persistance in the container.

This point I believe is well before the request is being processed by
JSF, at least from the
minimal stack trace shown.

Thank you for posting, Richard. Until now, I had no idea that anything
happened to the team, other than a sudden and obvious silence. I would
further suppose that you cannot elaborate on what we as users can expect
with the future of Woodstock? No offense taken if you choose to ignore
that question.

Regarding the Character Large Object type (CLOB), John Baker is the Sun
technician working this issue for me. The table component's Text Area
will display CLOB data - but issues an obscure message on post back (for
example, trying to edit, then post back the CLOB data). Refer to issue
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=148194

This is because "we" (the former Woodstock development team) are no
longer assigned to
Woodstock development.

I have remained on the alias, in case I can be of help in my spare time.
This means that if
I am familiar with a problem I will usually respond. If I am not
familiar with a problem
and it will require as much investigation for me as the reporter, then I
usually do not respond.

In particular I don't respond to email that I cannot understand like
this one that
refers to "CLOB" which I do not feel like trying to figure out ;)

I have an application that uses a converter to convert a CLOB type to
String. The converter works and when executing the application, the
converted value appears in a TextArea component.

However, if I do a postback then I get an ambiguous error message
in a message component.

It seems that TextArea does not support *LOB types

Is there any way to display the value of the CLOB in a TextArea?

Or, I should bind the TextArea to a String then cache the CLOB value
and use the converter to set the TextArea value?

I answered a similar email this morning.

But I know you are not going to want to hear this, but such a user
interface is not very
user friendly.

First there are no users that will be able to deal with a 1000 row table.
Secondly there are no users that are going to be able to deal with a
dropdown with 5000 entries.
I would suggest "partitioning" the data into more "common"
configurations. For example if all combinatorial
choices in such a table are possible, then determine the most common
combinations and have a table for
each of those common configurations. Maybe the dropdowns in those
configurations may only have
100 or so entries.

You are better off just having input fields and letting the user type in
the choice. This will save
them a tremendous amount of time, that they will have spend trying to
search through 5000 entries, among
30 dropdowns per row.

If you insist on such an inefficient user interface then the only way
you can manage this
is to have just in time loading of the dropdowns, as I mentioned in my
earlier email.
Or use auto complete fields if the user has an idea of what the choices are.

Clearly you cannot expect such a configuration to be efficient,
regardless of the component set
you choose. Firstly the Woodstock components are JSF component. JSF is a
server side framework,
meaning that the page is generated on the server, that means all the
rows and all the components with
their data are determined on the server. (Generally speaking of course.
JSF does have some "ajax"
client features but the Woodstock components used in a "vanilla" way via
the JSP tags are server side
components for the most part).

We did (I am no longer on the woodstock team and am answering this in my
spare time;) develop some
client side widgets that have the same JSF/JSP language bindings.
However it is the responsiibility
of the application developer to utilize the features of the widgets as
client side components.

For example when configured appropriately, the dropdowns can be loaded
just in time
on the client, when they are referenced.

You should read the documentation and since you have such a "special"
use case, you should get
familiar with the source code to allow you optimize your implementation
to your satisfaction.
