QST Magazine APRS StorySometime in the last year(or 2, or 3 - the concept of time seems to be
slipping away lately) there was a story in QST Magazine describing a method to integrate Google Earth (or Google Maps - the concept of details seems to have left on the same bus) with MH to map APRS positions. APRS, for those of you that aren't familiar with it, is a method of tracking Amateur Radios installed in anything from a bicycle to an amateur rocket - or handheld radios for that matter. There is direct support for APRS in MH, but unfortunately I've never succeeded in getting it to function properly. The author of the story was a subscriber to this list, and if he or anyone else could give me a pointer to what issue of QST the story is in, it would be greatly appreciated. I've looked in the QST online archive and my past issues, but so far I haven't located it. Also, if anyone has succeeded in getting MH talking to a Google mapping application for APRS, I could use some pointers. Re: QST Magazine APRS StoryI am guessing you are referring to an article in the April 2009 issue page 51 titled Where is Bob? For some reason this one did not come up on the ARRL site when searching for APRS articles but I found a reference to it here:
http://www.albemarleradio.org/members/Education.shtml and verified the year by looking up the latest April issue. I didn't find anything on this at the link to the authors site. There is a more detailed article on misterhouse and APRS here: http://www.kliers.net/aprs/index.htm I don't know anything more about it. I just saw your posting and had my QST issues handy. I would be interested in hearing about your efforts though.

I was so sure it had appeared a year or more ago that I didn't go through this years issues (but I did go through the previous 4 years!). The mind is a terrible thing to lose. I had tried several search terms on ARRL's site, but as you may have surmised, their search routines won't ever give Google much to fear. I've been using ui-view32 with Precision Mapping for several years, running 24/7 (on an XP machine, no less!), but the cost of electricity is about to give me heart failure, so it's time to find some more energy-efficient solutions. The mapping portion that I currently use Precision Mapping) consumes the most CPU cycles, and runs continuously. So if I can replace that with on-demand map data from Google, I can get rid of the big server and go with something more efficient. The kliers info is apparently the source of the module that's in MH now. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated for literally years, and the last time I tried it I didn't have any luck with it at all. I'll have to give it a spin again and see what I can find out.
