Quakelive beta

Hi
Im really keen on browser 3D games and Ive just notice Quakelive (http://www.quakelive.com/) appears to accept anyone now for their current beta phase.

This was different back in Feb when they announced Closed Public beta (does that even make sense?) and all I could do was submit an email on the front page and hope to be accepted.

The latest dev news is here:
http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22700

This is in direct competition to http://www.instantaction.com/, also in beta I believe which is having comparable success with its Legions FPS game and other genres.

me for one.

I worked for Transgaming for a short while as well.

There is no reason why it couldnt work on Linux and Mac and no doubt they would be released at similar times because the development is so related.

Its a business decision as always as to whether to support these platforms or not.  Mac is an upcoming game platform, they'd be silly not to be considering it.

I think Simon must have been yanking our chains. GNU/Linux is everywhere. We
just heard that the newly announced Google OS is GNU/Linux based, as is
Android, and that is going to mean a huge increase in desktop/phonetop market
share. Quite apart from that I would say there are more Linux kernels running
out there in the world than any other kernel, given that such a multitude of
routers, refridgerators, cars, and missiles run it, not to mention servers.
Basically, if you discount desktop machines (which are a small minority of
processors in the world) then GNU/Linux is totally killing it. Free Software
has won. Game over.

Of course, I still can't play Quake in my browser. :(

Also phones, I forgot about phones. There are 4.1 billion mobile phone
subscriptions active in the world and a bunch of those are running phones with
GNU/Linux at their core, even if they don't know it.

I don't really think its such a bad move only supporting windows, its not nice for the users of other platforms but i think its better putting all the effort into the most used gaming platform, Linux and Mac users don't decide to use those platforms because they want to play games. Although i am quite bias, being a windows user.

Also... saying linux is popular because its used in refrigerators and missiles isn't really relevant for the argument, when was the last time you felt like playing quake live on your missile? hehe

These two big, friendly robots run Linux:

and they beg to differ.

I've spent more hours gaming on Linux than any platform, thanks to nethack's addictiveness.. now I only really use Linux for my servers, but I am partial to gaming on my mac when I'm not browsergaming. We are in the minority though - we just like to argue louder than windows users.  ;)

Cheers,
Avril.

That is freaking awesome Simon - and here I was having pigeon holed you as a Linux hating troll :-)

Actually, I've cross posted this the Perth Linux User's Group (PLUG) list as well since it deserves some kudos ;-)
