Dear list members,
I'd like to share with you the new public wiki that
I started, meant to host tutorials and other teaching/learning
materials for Quantitative Archaeology on a public web space.

This wiki is hosted on Wikia.com and its URI is
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Quantitative_Archaeology

I chose to start it on a third party free host so that everyone feels
free to give her/his contribution.

It's quite empty at the moment but I hope I'll be able to get the two
existing sections complete soon. This is not a call for volunteers, but
if you want, you can come in and help, it's just a matter of creating a
free account.

My idea was to build something different from the iosa.it portal (that
hosts mainly links) and start creating free documentation from scratch,
while learning for my studies. The license for all pages is the GNU
Free Documentation License.

If you like the wiki and want to add more content, feel free to do so
but please let us know replying to this message or starting a new
thread on this mailing list.

Best regards and sorry for crossposting this message.

Hi Stefano,

I am working on some tutorial about the use of free software in archaeology. They should be ready for May. It is a project sponsored by the University of Innsbruck and they will share the data I need to write the tutorial (basically the data of the Aramus excavation in Armenia). All the tutorial will be released in the FDL and posted in the website of the University, but we could insert them in the wiki too. Let me know if you are interested.

Best reguards,

Luca Bezzi

Luca,
this is great news. Everybody is writing documentation for personal or
teaching purposes, so it shouldn't be a great effort to share something.
The wiki is a good place because we can keep in the same place different
pieces of documentation, add screenshots. And Wikia has no limits on
storage..

Is there anyone else willing to put his/her documentation online under a
free license?

Hi Everyone

I am writing some software under the GPL right now, and utilizing GRASS, QGis, and POSTGis.  I am currently writing up a manual of sorts for my program, but I do have questions and would appreciate some input.  As almost all of this is directly pertinent for my thesis, is there anything I would need to do or be aware of if I do make this all available under a GPL license?

On another note, have you seen www.captorials.com ?  I made a couple of video tutorials with the software, and it is incredibly easy, and hosting is free, with no limit.  I talked with the webmaster, and he is happy to host as many video tutorials as we can make.

Have a great day everyone

Jason

Your main consideration is to make sure you actually own
the software, ie that you are able to license it. If you are
a PhD student, what is your funding? any sponsorship?
what agreement have you signed with your employer
or university?

If you *do* own it, you have copyright by default, you don't
do anything special. You just give someone a copy of
the software with a licence agreement attached (ie the GPL).
That is the contract. If I do not accept your contract,
I have no right to use your stuff.

Put a GPL notice in every separate file of code or data
as a comment. ie simply
 /*
 Copyright Jason Jorgenson
Licensed under the GPL, see file LICENSE
 */
or the like
