Question for Word specialists

Hello,

how can I replace the beginning of a footnote in Word from a space to a tab?
Let me explain:
I have the footnote number and usually a space, then starts the footnote.
If the footnote numbering exceeds 10 or 99 and the footnote is longer
than one line, this can't be compensated with a indent/ hanging indent.
The only solution would be a tab after the number.
How can I do this automatically.
I know how to it manually ;-) but that gets tiresome with more than a
couple of hundreds of footnotes.

If I try Search and Replace like ^f^w -> ^f^t, word doesn't want to do it.

btw, this is Office2008 on Mac10.5.6

Any ideas?

Thanks

Matthias
