R1 oil level light?R1 oil level light?
I've got an 5VY R1 ('06), baffled and breather mods done feeding to a catch tank. I get no oil in the catch tank, just a little condensation. It's also got an oil over fill as recommended by those in the know. Now the problem. When running at constant mid revs (7-8000) on the motorway the oil level light comes on. Pressure remains good (70-80psi). Ease off and it goes out; push on to 9000+rpm and it goes out! As the engine revs increase, the level drops but that doesn't account for it going back out at higher revs. It's done 4500miles now and not blown up including one run at 90+mph (abroad) for 1 1/2 hour so... Any theories? adrian |

Re: R1 oil level light? Can't really help as I've only done about 20 miles in mine and about 1/2 of that has been in competition but I'd be interested to know how much overfill you got?
I have a baffle fitted, have modded the AIS and have the breathers connected to a catch tank, I filled mine to the top of the window didn't know how much to overfill. I was out sprinting at the weekend and mine blew about 1/4 of a litre out. Prior to the weekend my oil light has never come on once the oil temp has got above about 70 degrees. After I'd lost the oil it was coming on towards the end of my run but that was flat in 2nd, 3rd and 4th down the finishing straight. It soon went off once i backed off. I'm pretty sure I run around on the road in the 7-8000 revs area and I've not noticed it once the oil is up to temp. Re: R1 oil level light? It might just be something as simple as dodgy electrics or oil pressure sender

Re: R1 oil level light?Over-filled so that the oil is 3/4 way up the window with engine running hot at idle and drops to the bottom (but still visable) of the window with revs. Tried more than this and it made no difference (slightly worse if anything). It happened when I first had the car on the road but got better and is now back since I changed the oil. The level is the same as before.
I did wonder if it was getting froth on the top of the oil and the switch coming on because of that. Then at higher revs the oil level drops a bit and the frothing is reduced?? adrian |

RE: Re: R1 oil level light?Simple solution ..... Disconnect it :)))) The oil level light is as useful
as a chocolate ashtray in a BEC. If the oil level ever got so low as to trigger the oil level light then you'd have much bigger things to worry about in your engine than the light coming on. Oil pressure is the only thing you need to worry about. jr |

Re: R1 oil level light?Cheers, i'll check my oil.
Seems a bit bizarre, I'm not that experienced with the way the engine works, it don't make sense to me that it should happen in the middle of the rev range unless its that point that the oil is drawn away from the switch but still steady and over that the switch is knocking off due to splash back as the oil gets thrashed about? I would have thought the switch would need to be submerged to work though. --- In bike-engined-cars@..., "adithorp" <adithorp@...> wrote: > > Over-filled so that the oil is 3/4 way up the window with engine running hot at idle and drops to the bottom (but still visable) of the window with revs. Tried more than this and it made no difference (slightly worse if anything). Re: R1 oil level light? It's usefull that at idle to know the level isn't dropping and also comes on if you get the revs up before the engine is warm so reminds me not to thrash it when cold! I'm not worried, 4500miles in and it's fine (not blown up) but just curious to know why. Would just put it down to the swich being high up; The switch is more a "oil level below full" than "oil low" and the level drops as the revs increase, ...but why does it go out at higher revs ...and not happen after the oil has done a few miles?

RE: Re: R1 oil level light?I wonder if this has anything to do with the rate at which oil can return to
the bottom of the sump via the baffle plate?? i.e. not enough and/or large enough drian holes in the baffle plate. By increasing revs the pressure relief valve may be actuated directing oil more quickly back to the sump? Just a theory - otherwise it sounds like a dodgy level indication. - Paul -----Original Message----- From: bike-engined-cars@... Re: R1 oil level light?Don't think so because the level switch sticks up through the baffle.

RE: Re: R1 oil level light? The low "trigger point" level would be well below the baffle

Re: R1 oil level light?I've taken the "butterflys" out of the baffle to increase flow from above the plate to below it. If That was the cause then the oil would be building up above the baffle and show high in the window. I can only see this at revs when stationary but it's not doing that. How about that at certain revs the flow pattern results in a low where the sensor is but ok at higher revs? Or certain vibration frequencies affect the sensor?
