Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, October 16, 2009.

Fall AOS birders reported around 178 species at the 10/11 compilation on Dauphin Island.  The most noteworthy weekend finds were a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and a BELL’S VIREO (10/10, open brush field behind Ft. Gaines), BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS (see below), JAEGER SP. (10/9, from ferry near Ft. Gaines), BAIRD’S SANDPIPER and MARBLED GODWITS (10/10-11, west end beach and mud flat), YELLOW-BELLIED and LEAST FLYCATCHERS (10/9-11, Shell Mounds), around 26 warbler species including BLACK-THROATED BLUE (10/9, Shell Mounds), and a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD (10/10, west end beach flying east with Red-wings).  Later on 10/11 a walk out to the end of the “Pelican peninsula” south of the pier on Dauphin Island resulted in sightings of a GREAT BLACK-BACKED (1st cycle) and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]

BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS continue to be found at Blakeley Island in Mobile where the species has been a regular treat since April.  During AOS weekend, several adults and also juveniles were found.  On 10/15, 16 (!) adults were found with one juvenile.  Also seen that day were four ROSEATE SPOONBILLS.   REMEMBER:  this is an access-restricted area and an annual, signed, hold harmless permit is required to be in the possession of State Docks security personnel prior to making your visit.  A pre-visit notification phone call to security personnel is also required.  These rules have been established in order to maintain access to this productive birding area and must be followed to the letter.  For full details, a map of the area, and copies of the required permit visit the AOS web site at:  http://www.aosbirds.org/blakeley.php

[DeAL 62-C4][BGtA p. 41][ACBT #32]

The Hummer/Bird Study Group will be banding at Ft. Morgan through October 22.  Visitors are welcome!  Please note:  this banding operation takes place on fort property so expect to pay the standard fort entrance fee.  In the interest of maintaining a positive birder image with those administrating the fort, PLEASE be sure you pay your way!!!   Passerine banding during their first week of work has been slow for the most part, however, it should pick up significantly this weekend with the passage of the season’s first strong cold front.  Noteworthy captures so far were a BELL’S VIREO on 10/9 and a male WESTERN TANAGER on 10/15.  Visitors to Ft. Morgan 10/15 found four SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS and two WESTERN KINGBIRDS.  [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23][ACBT #15]

A male SHINY COWBIRD was seen 10/8 on the coast guard plane near the entrance to the USS Alabama battleship park in Mobile. This bird was not relocated during AOS weekend. [DeAL 62-D4][BGtA p. 41][ACBT #28&29]
