Jeez, I cant see how anyone can stick with Spectra - maybe you should
suggest installing Windows 3.11 on the servers....surely it's the same thing
with regards to defunk technology..

Once the FarCry 2.4 (codename: Glamour) goes live it might be worth
having another crack at the suits.

I suppose, yeah if you are bound by customers then you do have no
choice....we are lucky as we only develop for ourselves!

Sure there is a choice, but it belongs to the customer (or whomever is
paying for it). If the current system is meeting their current and
near-future needs then it isn't always easy to convince them to migrate to
something else.

Well there is always a choice, just sometimes the people with the
decisions
cant see that (typical non-technical managers).

Maybe some people stick with it because they have a bunch of customers and
code on it? And it's free and freely modifiable. It isn't exactly Windows
for Workgroups. Sure the thing was written on 4.5.1 and doesn't take
advantage of the newer stuff. With minimal modification of tags you can
implement things like QoQ and UDF (etc, etc). Ultimately I'd like to
switch to something else, but that means convincing customers to pay for a
switch.

You certainly are lucky. But really, when CFC's came out did you run right
out and rewrite most or all of your old code (which was working fine)? Or
did you wait until you were in a revision cycle? When you're doing things
for yourself (like I do in my side business) it is easy to be an early
adopter. But in a large organization like my regular job is you don't have
that luxury. We have to plan budgets for development a year in advance and
justify everything. It took us almost 2 years to upgrade from CF 5 to
CFMX. We have reduced that time and the upgrade from CFMX 6.1 to 7 has
only been around 6 months or so.

I still have to use spectra, small company and time/money to move across are
my barriers but Glamour here I come soon with any luck...

But I don't get why people are so down on spectra, it still works ok on CF 7
and while a bit eccentric still does what it says on the tin. Not bad across
4 versions of cf.
