README: Where to find the latest Red5 Stable Build

Hi folks,

The Red5 Continuous Build Server now generates a stable-build
everytime we have a bulid pass all of our Java and System tests.  You
can find the latest successful builds (automatically updated) here:

http://build.xuggle.com/job/red5_jdk5_stable/

If you click on any given build, it will tell you want SVN revisions
it was based off of.

A Stable Build is one that:
1) Compiles successfully on Java 1.5
2) All JUnit tests pass 100%
3) Our Flash System Test passes 100%
The Flash System Test includes, connecting and disconnecting from
flash, making AMF client side calls, playing back movies, and
recording in a flash player.

As usual, you can find more about the testing we're doing as part of
0.8 to make the final (and future) release more stable in the Red5
Reference Manual:
http://jira.red5.org/confluence/display/docs/Table+Of+Contents

Hi Art,

What's the difference between Successful and Stable build(see below)?
Is the successful build more stable?

Successful build means the compile succeeded and zero OR MORE tests failed.
Stable build means the compile succeeded and exactly ZERO tests failed.

Re: Will Ubantu 9.04 work on MacPro Intel when 64-bit download says AMD?

The Xeon is certainly 64-bit is it not?

I'm using VMWare Fusion 2.0 for now to install Ubantu but when I chose to download the 64-bit version it has -amd64.iso in the name.

I'm downloading it from one of the several (but not many sites in the US and it happens to be my Alma Matter, The University of Tennessee; great program).

Is this just a download name that basically implied it supports AMD and Intel Xeon 8-core?

Obviously with VMWare I want it to run as fast as possible and I give VMWare the Priority when run (it has that option).

Or would I be better off with the x386 version?

You will always be able to build from svn.  This thread is just referring to the Red5 build system which actually tests the builds before tagging them.  It's the same thing as building against the trunk ;)

What's the jiggery pokery?

I'm using VMWare 2.0.5 for now since I'll decide on a self-build Linux system later.

Re: Simple Needs

Someone asked about my Simple Needs for Red5 and Xuggle.

I would say that it's 720p and/or 1040p FLV Streaming with Cuepoints
and with the Modification features of Xuggler that could perhaps turn
into what FxFactory is involved in with Adobe Premiere and Final Cut
Plug-ins, but for the Live Streams.

After that it's simple XML based messaging.

What I need to do is get up to speed with the rest of you by
installing Red5 on my VMWare Ubantu 64-bit install and go from there
with some stock footage from  ArtBeats.com

Believe it or not I don't yet have a Camera - partly because I'm
trying to partner with others locally in the purchase of a RED ONE
Camera and accessories.

Good Filming of Natural locations is crucial to Quick Stage Extension
editing.

In the end, I may, instead of building my own Linux Server, stay with
RackSpace and Cloud Files, and then use a Cloud Server installed with
Ubantu to deliver the media, but in the meantime, to keep costs down
(I spent it all on this MacPro that was outdated in 8 months, but
Intel is going to go down, FTC complaints are already being filed
after EU Anti-Trust case, and AMD will become more and more relevant,
so will NVIDIA (I like both AMD and NVIDIA, humble companies who are
interested in Developer support).

Intel has been going through complaints in trying to slaughter AMD
since the early 90's.  I used to never even consider AMD, but now I am.

The issue I'm having is is see AMD as a little behind when it comes to
Real-Time Simulations in Physics (I may do a Research Grant in Physics
Simulation which I'd like to stream in real time out to other
professors instead of posting a movie; it's more exciting when people
know it's happening in real time).

By AMD I actually mean ATI Radeon which they just acquired -- Great
Gaming Card, but I'm not so sure they are going to let the developers
as close to them as NVIDIA even though I support AMD.

Anyway, real time animation in Blender using CUDA driver, real time
feeds of Camera from the field (not the RED ONE RAM DRIVE, but a
lesser resolution for producers at a remote area creating a multi-non-
linear Film.

Don't listen to 64-bit naysayers. I'm serious. I used to be the same way, running 32 bit because of the horror stories I have heard of Windows. But remember, you're using Linux now. The ONLY package that I have NOT found for 64 bit is ZSNES, which is a SNES emulator so you can play megaman and the like :) (And even still, you can compile it manually yourself if you want, it's not that difficult)

I made the jump to 64 a while back, and I haven't looked back. It just works. My current stack runs on Java, MySQL, PHP, and Apache, and I haven't had any problems with 'em. I'm also running my desktop machines on Ubuntu 9.04 64bit and haven't really had any problems with it. In fact, it's like I'm not even running 64bit: I haven't noticed any difference except a speed increase on things like video encoding via FFMPEG. Don't fear 64bit! In my own opinion, as developers, we should push 64bit as a standard to keep the bar moving forward.

I'll second Tyler's comments.   Especially if you're running Java applications that use large amounts of memory (over 4GB), 64-bit is crucial.  We run all of our servers in 64-bit mode, especially if we're decoding video and audio into raw data (raw video frames take up quite a bit of RAM).

There are some gotchas (e.g. Apple Mac OS's 64-bit JVM can sometimes attempt to use too much disk-swap instead of throwing Out Of Memory errors like it should), but most libraries designed to run in servers have already worked through them for you.  For example, we test Red5 every night on both 64-bit and 32-bit JVMs to make sure it behaves in both environments.
