RFI: Philly area in late December

Greetings

I have the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia between Christmas and
New Years, when my significant other will be attending the MLA (Modern
Language Association) conference. I don't know much about the birding
opportunities in that part of the world at that time of year. So I'll
take advantage of the folks on this list and try to learn.

I probably will have a vehicle, so would be able to travel farther
afield. I don't have any target species. Opportunities for bird
photography (i.e., places with lots of birds, or approachable birds) are
appreciated.

What are my options? How far is it to places on the Jersey shore, and
are those places good birding spots at that time of year?

Or should I save my money and hope that they have MLA in San Francisco
again soon?

thanks for any advice, suggestions, etc'

Dave

Hello Dave,
As many of you must know, the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, the oldest in the US, and based in the region, offers much information and organizes many field trips in the Philadelphia area.

Their website: www.dvoc.org

However, the success of your conference and your trip, and the general spirit of the Philadelphians, may depend on the next few days and the fortunes of either Mr. Howard or Mr. Rodriguez, both genuine "bat" experts! (pardon the reference to a non-birding activity).
