Re: RFI Dry TortugasYou can get day trips out of Key West. Primitive camping is allowed, but
you must take everything with you, including water. I've been there three times in May, but I would think February is probably too early for the breeders: the terns, frigatebirds, boobies, etc, and also for the migrants. Even so, Fort Jeff is a magic place and the snorkeling is always good. Cheers. Re: RFI Dry TortugasHi Ellen--
The December 2009 issue of Birder's World, the magazine I edit, has a wonderful article about birding the Dry Tortugas by talented Wisconsin birder (and talented writer) Steve Betchkal. Steve's article describes the two ferries that service Dry Tortugas National Park: Fast Cat (800) 236-7937 http://www.drytortugas.com Yankee Freedom II (800) 634-0939 http://www.yankeefreedom.com And it lists companies that are offering tours to the Tortugas in 2010 (they're all a little later than February): High Lonesome Birdtours April 25-30 (800) 743-2668 http://www.hilonesometours.com Larry Manfredi Birding Tours Six tours throughout April (305) 247-3960 http://southfloridabirding.com Victor Emanuel Nature Tours April 28-May 1 (800) 328-8368 http://ventbird.com Wildside Nature Tours April 21-24, April 29-May 2 (888) 875-9453 http://www.wildsidetoursinc.com WINGS April 24-May 1 Includes Florida Keys (888) 293-6443 http://www.wingsbirds.com Our December 2009 issue will be available on newsstands early next week.
