Just one more point to add to this discussion, copy write laws are not
universal, and vary from country to country. Here in Canada, for
example, making a copy for personal use is clearly stated as being
legal. (Well as clearly as anything written in legaleze!) Further,
we pay a tax on blank CD's (cassettes, video tape) which goes to an
artists fund to help compensate for illegal copies.
