RRD Caching Daemon (rrdcached)
------------------------------

The RRD Caching Daemon can dramatically improve the 'update' performance
of your system. Due to file handling overheads, the time it takes todo one
update is virtually the same as to doing two updates in a row.

The Cache Daemon intercepts rrdtool update calls, assembling multiple
updates before writing them to the actual rrd file. When calling rrdtool
graph in such a setup, the command will tell the daemon to flush out all
pending updates for the rrd files, required to draw the graph.

RRD Dumping and Restoring (rrdtool dump/restore)

The output of rrdtool dump has been adjusted to be simpler to parse by
existing xml parsers.

The restore core has been completely re-written yet again and is now relying
on an incremental xml parser. This has the advantage that the memory
consumption while restoring xml files is only slightly larger than the
resulting rrd file. Which is much less than the requirements of the 1.3 and
even 1.2

RRD Graphing functions (rrdtool graph)

RRDtool web Wizard

Hi guys,

As already stated on the Support page of RRDtool
(http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/support.en.html), there is a new RRDtool
Wizard which should help us build the long command line options for the
RRD create and RRD graph commands.

Not all RRD options and features are supported by the wizard but the
most common are, so it should be usable for most of the use-cases. If
there is enough interest and if you find this tool useful, I could
extend it.

Feel free to share your thoughts about it as I didn't hesitate to drop
you this note :)

Bug fixes:

- python bindings memory handling fix by Anders Hammarquist
(deb bug #529291)

- fix getopt_long integration on Solaris. Depending on the phase of
the moon this bug had caused rrdtool to crash reliably as soon as
it read its arguments. Especially when used in language bindings.
Thanks to Ihsan Dogan for helping with the debugging.

- rrd_restore used casting a bit to liberally this caused it to fail
horribly on 64bit platforms. Patch based in input provided by
poster of rrd bug #218.

- make ruby bindings compile with newer ruby versions. #217 patch
provided by rrd trac user

- Generate an error message when using RRDp with graph - this can
not work reliably. (Debian Bug#251701) patch by Sebastian Harl

rrdtool 1.3.7 released - segfault fixed, hw performance enhanced

RRDtool 1.3.7 released

The new release contains some rather influential changes.

* Holt-Winters rrds should see a drastic speedup.
* Front-ends relying on output from graph --lazy will work again
* updatev does not segfault on 32 bit platforms anymore.
* rrd_dump produces correct output with german locales.

Detailed changes for 1.3.7
--------------------------

Bugfixes:

- fixed sprintf segmentation fault in updatev function for all
architectures where sizeof(time_t) == 32

- removed all instances of rrd_flush from the holt winters code
resulting in a massive performance gain for holt winters updates.
rrd_flush was a left-over from the time when rrdtool IO was
stream based. Even worse, the old fflush had been converted to
fsync which was plain wrong.

- fixed rrd_xport output which included some stray debug output.

- fixed rrd_strerror handling to correctly work both for linux and
posix compliant implementations.

- misc documentation fixes

- added missing utime.h include for architectures where it does not
get loaded by some other dependency

- compilation fixes for rrd_dump on windows

- make rrd_dump work correctly even when using a locale where the
decimal separator is no '.'

- restore classic behaviour of --lazy, doing all the calc work and
outputting PRINT statements even when it does not draw the graph.
This fixes some mrtg front-ends which have relied on this
behaviour for a long time.

Enhanced Features

- graphv will now return graph_start and graph_end variables
containing the timestamps for the start and the end of the graph.

poll: rrdtool binary package subscriptions

In a recent discussion, a customer mentioned that they would be
willing to buy a subscription for rrdtool
rpms/pkgs/debs.

Always on the lookout for ways to finance our OSS activities I am
quite keen to investigate this angle.

The idea is to build packages that install into
/opt/rrdtool-version including all dependencies not provided by
the base system, making it really simple to deploy the things as
well as test new versions alongside old ones, without disturbing
the system.

Question regarding creating comparision graphs

We are in the process of researching to use RRDTool graph to create graphs.

We run load tests periodically. When we run load tests we would collect system metrics like cpu, memory, network etc (using cacti). What we are interested in is to create one graph which will display two data graph lines in the SAME graph PNG file one with one time period for CPU usage and line another time period. So that we can compare if there is any change from test to another.

We run one test on 11/01/2008 from 10AM to 10PM and the next test on 11/03/2008 11AM to 11PM.

Using the RRDTool is it possible to compare cpu usage of both these periods?

Can any one help us out. If it is already in the mailing list please point to the link.

I would greatly appreciate.

* detect short/truncated files on open (rrdtool used to crash later

not crash anymore.

* fix rrd_xport when used on datasources with different
resolutions. This has been broken from day 1 of this tools
exsitance.

* added rpath for perl bindings on bsd

* do not [fm]advise past the end of the file since this
causes crashes on sparc.

with creating graphs, it did break badly when you tried to supply

fontmap. On my test system the persistent fontmap causes the
second graph with the same fonts in a single session to be
created about 0.18s faster than the first one. For a total graph
creation time of 0.21s this is a pretty substantial improvement.
With this patch, performance for the second graph is back to
1.2.x levels or even better.

you have a 60 Second step with 59s unknown data and 1 second of
known data the whole become known data as long as the mrhb was >
step. The intended behaviour was that a step should become
unknown as soon as it contains more than 50% of unknown data. The
patch fixes both the documentation and the code.

* make sun studio 11 compiler happy

* fixed dst handling in parsetime.

* Generate a random cur_row for each RRA during create/restore
operations. This effectively randomizes the block crossings among
RRDs created around the same time. Previously, RRDs that were
created/restored en masse would cross block boundaries
simultaneously, which is sub-optimal. Also, this patch enables
the user to see the RRA's cur_row pointer via rrdinfo.

* If you create an RRD with the new MHWPREDICT function, the
resulting rrd file will be version 0004 and can only be used in
rrdtool 1.3.

Rewrites
--------
* rrd_restore now uses libxml for parsing which makes things much
more tolerant towards xml variations. The old code could mostly
just parse the XML as it was output by rrdtool dump. See also:
the note at the bottom of this document. (by Florian octo

* rrd_update rewritten to make it more modular. Fixed two
longstanding HW bugs in the process (Evan Miller)

unhappy.

* To restore a new dump with an old rrdtool restore version, either
remove the XML header and the doctype by hand (both on the first
line of the dump) or use rrdtool dump --no-header.

* took a step towards a more standardized librrd: all symbols are
now prefixed with rrd_* and only the 'public' symbols are
exported. (more will be in 1.4.x)

* fixed a bug that caused --font to not actually pickup any font
names (it seems not many use this feature, since the bug has been
around in 1.2 for some time as well)

* make pango markup configurable. Now only when you run graph with
--pango-markup, your strings will be markup-processed. Otherwise
all < and > characters will be printed as is. This was necessary
to stop old software that uses these characters from breaking.

* fixed tcl bindings to build with newer version of tcl.

* fixed rrd_context memory corruption problem due to incorrect
ordering of struct elements.

* added notes on building for gentoo.

* Fixed VDEF calculation to actually stop at the end of the requested
time frame as oposed to the end of the data gotten from fetch.
This could cause LAST to be 0 under certain conditions.

* Fix imginfo buffer length issue. There was an unnecessary
length limit of 47 characters which is realy not enough for
imginfo. This caused the NRG frontend to fail.

they use up the available space but still don't run into each
other.

* Shrunk spaceing at the bottom of the graph after the last legend
line.

rrdtool-1.3rc5 is out

The RCs continue. This is hopefully be the last one, but who am I
to tell.

* Fixed Updates for 1.0.x files. This has been broken for over a
year. It seems not all that many people have been testing the new
release with old files. The problem was, that with the new MMAP
code, the last_update time did not get written back to the rrd
file which caused the rrd to get filled with NaNs at an
incerassing speed with every update.

* INCOMPATIBILE CHANGE - Updated python bindings for 'info' to not
be broken anymore by using the real rrd_info code. This does
unfortunately break compatibility with the previous 'info'
implementation for python, but since it segfaulted reliably I
guess that not many people have been using it lately.

* Added 'updatev' and 'graphv' to the python bindings.

* fixed tab expansion for '\t' inline tabs.

* fixed pdf, svg and ps output format to actually get written to a
file (another feature not many people seem to be using yet)

A tester reported a regression with logarithmic graphs versus 1.2
(the cacti problemm refered to in RC2). The fix for this and an

New Features since Beta 4:

* Ignore RRA when comparing coverage with rrd_fetch
this helps fetch pick the right RRA even when the
RRAs do not match up.

* nan save ADDNAN operator with the following behavior

NaN + NaN => NaN
x + NaN => x
NaN + y => y
x + y => x + y

* treat nan as false in IF expressions

* graphv interface which returns much more meta data
about the graph thank its sister function 'graph'
It uses the rrd_info interface. When called with '-' as graph
name, even the graph itself will be returned in memory. This is
especially interesting with Perl and ruby bindings which support
the new graphv call for scripting.

Bug fixes since beta 4:

* Fixed handling of unknown data at PDP build time. There was a
long standing (even documented) miss-feature in RRDtool which
caused unknown-data to be accepted as long as it was less than
the mrhb. This was never the intended behavior and had
interesting side effects
(http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool-trac/ticket/125): If you have a 60
second step with 59s unknown data and 1 second of known data the
whole PDP become known data with the value of the 1 second of
known data available, as long as the mrhb was > step. The
intended behavior was that a step should become unknown as soon
as it contains more than 50% of unknown data.

* Fixed tcl bindings build

* rrd_tune only reset last_ds when the DS is actually changed.

* fix time handling during DST/non-DST switch over time

* many compiler warnings squashed.

* make build on OpenSolaris 2008.05

* make ruby obey destdir

* fixed Cairo calling errors
