Hi There,

Can we use Rational Quality Manager to execute SAFS related test scripts. If yes please let me know how to integrate RQM with SAFS.

Thanks,
Jayasurya

Hopefully someone might have tried this.  We tried this several years ago with the original Test Manager.  It was a terrible ugly thing to do that provided lots of extra work and uncovered several integration issues between Robot and Test Manager.  It was not worth it and we have not wanted to try this ever since.

Perhaps others may have had better luck with RQM.

In TestManager, it meant making a whole bunch of mostly identical CycleDriverTest-like scripts (Suites, etc.) that did nothing other than launch RRAFS with the appropriate test to run. For that Suite.

Don't know how this would translate into RQM.  Don't use it.

I cannot give you anything of much value.  I don't even know what Quality Manager looks like.  I don't know its features or how it works.

I can tell you what we did many years ago with Robot and Test Manager.

Essentially, any script or suite we defined in RTM actually became a separate "CycleDriverTest-like" wrapper to invoke the CycleDriver, SuiteDriver, or StepDriver of RRAFS.  It was manually time consuming and ugly and had terrible performance--when it worked.  There were so many Robot to RTM integration bugs at the time that more often RTM could not run the scripts correctly.

That was with Robot.

With SAFS and RFT we have a completely different scenario.  RFT runs as a separate standalone SAFS "Engine".  The SAFS TID is a separate external process "Driver" and is run independent of RFT.  I don't even know if you can effectively have RFT running in one instance being the SAFS/RFT engine and then have Quality Manager separately launch another instance of RFT to run a script or suite that launches the SAFS/TID to run a Cycle or Suite of tests through the first running instance of RFT.

Now, if RQM doesn't have to run RFT scripts, but can instead run any type of application to satisfy a "script" or "suite", then simply have the SAFS services and the SAFS/RFT engine running and have each "script" or "suite" be a command-line invocation of the SAFS/TID using a different INI file specifying which tests satisfy that "script" or "suite".  That means for every script or suite in RQM you will also have to define an associated SAFS INI file and the test tables to satisfy that script or suite.

This is A LOT of extra time consuming manual work that will likely have terrible performance because of the gazillion times you would be going through SAFS/TID startup and shutdown.  And how do the test results get back into RQM in this scenario?  Or do they?

There are other less performance-penalizing alternatives, but they would require a modification to the SAFS TID Driver--or a new type of Driver--that would allow the Driver to run in STEP mode and NOT take input from a file.  Instead, the Driver could operate in STEP mode under the assumption that every time it was instructed to RUN one Step the InputRecord was already preset and ready-to-run by some other external process, or manual human intervention.

Let me know if any of this information helps in any way.  I would be interested to hear how things transpire if you make an attempt to get this working with RQM.
