I have been known to pick up a stidemt's purse, extract the wallet, and take a few bills out of the wallet during class, in full view of the students.  When someone questions me I ask what the moral difference is between stealing money and stealing ideas. (I give the money back.)

money's material. ideas are virtual. if you take money from someone, they no
longer have that money. if you take ideas from someone, they still have
those ideas. taking credit for someone else's ideas can prevent whoever
actually came up with the idea from taking credit for it, but how often are
students plagiarizing from classmates?

All the time!

The hardworking students are expected to let the lazy ones copy due to their "friendship" bond even if it means the good students get caught.

so two different students hand the same teacher identical essays on the same day? how do they not get caught? what are the penalties when they do?
