I also agree with Terrence when he said that sometimes we don't really know why the students are using their cell phones. There may be situations that they don't share with us.

If I gave the impression that teachers who don't allow Chinese or cell phones in their classes are wrong, I apologize. I was sharing what I do and not telling others what to do. We have to make our decisions based on our teaching styles and students.

My comment:
I agree that we have to make out ow decisions based on our styles, I don't see how it depends on our students realy, but that's MY style. I am teaching the class therefore I am in control. The students know that.I'm not sure about Terence's point about the teacher not knowing why the students are using mobiles i class. The point I made is that they have NO reasn to use a mobile IN class and if they MUST use it, then they can vacate the classroom first to minimise disruptio for others. This aspect of consideration is something I feel has to be taught i China, the cultue seems generally to lack consideration for others generally speaking.
