You have sounds unmuted in the preferences dialog? You have the specific
sound events you want to hear enabled? You can test those sounds
correctly? And despite all that you can't actually hear the sounds occur
in normal use? What sound events specifically are we talking about? If
they are conversation related sounds does the Options menu for those
conversations have Sounds enabled?
