In about 1994, I got busted in Michigan on the way back from Grattan
Racetrack. I was lost and doing 90 in a 50. The LEO drove a caprice
heading in the opposite direction. I saw him turn the lights on as he
passed me. I pulled over and stopped before he even started to do a
U-turn.
I received a road-side chat and a $65 ticket for 9mph over the limit.
I was also from Ontario at the time, so I had to pay "on the spot" or
have my vehicle towed. He drove with me down to a local ATM to get the
money, then led me to the highway I was trying to find.
I sent a glowing letter of thanks for his professional behavior and
the respect he showed me to his department. I got a letter back from
them indicating they appreciated my positive feedback and that my
letter would go into his service record. I didn't bother mentioning
the "special" treatment I received of course. :-)
On the other side of things, I received a race-related death threat
from a black woman in DC. The black officer who showed up threatened
to arrest me if I didn't just let it go. He basically said I shouldn't
have been there. He also gave me his card and essentially said I
should file a complaint. I had no idea what that was all about, but it
was pretty clear that there was a whole lot of something going on to
which I wasn't privy, and wasn't ever going to be. I filed the
complaint .. three times. Each time, the complaint got "lost". I'd
heard DC was like a third world country, but that really cemented it
for me.
