« Return to Thread: [Tiki-devel] An idea for an extended LTS period
6.x LTS ceases (and 9.x LTS starts) when Tiki 10.1 comes out.Exactly.
Please re-read: http://dev.tiki.org/Version+lifecycle
6.x LTS ceases (and 9.x LTS starts) when Tiki 10.1 comes out. This was the commitment and this is what will happen.
We don't want LTS people to upgrade from 6.9 to 9.0 because of stability issues. But by the time 10.1 is released, we'll be at around 9.4, thus pretty stable.
The ASCII chart for extended LTS is there to make it easier to visualize how/when the versions overlap. Now, we need to discuss if we have the resources / volunteers to commit to this.
Best regards,
M :-)

+1 to the general ideas (for 9.x and beyond) ... BUT
There are some pretty gruesome things happening right now though:
L (Long Term Support) for 6.x stops in less than 2 months,
7.x is dead
8.x expires at the same time 6.x does, but
9.0 release isn't until the same month 6.x stops being LTS (and 8.x
stops being the Stable version) !
and
9.x as a Stable branch is due the same month 6.x and 8.x EXPIRE, and
9.x doesn't become LTS until 7 months after the last LTS version ceased !
Having propagated the concept of LTS versions on which production
systems can rely
Tiki may find itself losing a considerable number of sites during this
6-7 gap when there is no LTS at all.
As eager as Robert Plummer is to branch I would strongly recommend to
the group that some form of X-EXtended support is needed NOW to bridge
the half-year gap in LTS versions that is about to happen.
Otherwise tiki-devels may be developing to a much smaller base.
And users and user-groups you lose are notoriously difficult to get back.
Tiki may also find itself faced with questions in online journals,
forums and development/support sites about what happened to its
commitment to its user base - as it ceases to have an LTS version ...
Your idea for an extended LTS period is excellent, Marc, no - its
essential, but it needs to be taken a step further -
At least to bridge the gap between when 6.x ceases to be at the end of
April 2012 and 9.x becomes the next LTS in November (or perhaps it will
not be so until December) some sort of EXtended support is needed !
just my 2 cents worth,
