For what it's worth, I couldn't get it to work either using this command:
eclipse -vm /path/to/jikesrvm/dist/production_ia32-linux/rvm

The RVM starts and consumes one of my cores but Eclipse never starts up.
   This is with Jikes RVM 3.0.1 and Eclipse 3.2 on Ubuntu 8.10.
