Paul - why don't you set up a recurring payment system? See if you can't
get a lot of people donating a small amount monthly - would probably end
up more in the long term and would give you some predictable cash flow
so you can actually look at hiring someone part/full time based on the
cash coming in each month.

Perhaps market it as a 'sponsors club' which gives members access to a
sponsors-only support mailing list which has slightly priority. This
would be great incentive for continued giving.

Some others have since told me the same thing.  I think it's a good
idea, as, as you might expect, we had a small handful of people kindly
respond to that announcement, but since then, we've not really seen
any donations.  The last thing I want to do is keep bugging people
about it, so this idea is definitely a good one - it will have to take
some figuring out how to set it up, though - not sure if it can be
done with PayPal, or if we'd even want to do it that way.

That's a decent idea.  I'd be very interested to see what other people
think about it.....???

Just my two cents...: although right now I don't have any money left to
donate I wouldn't even if I could. PayPal is just not where I want to
leave my name. A simple bank account to transfer money to would probably
attract more people. No registering, just pushing the money.
But that counts for me and I don't know if I'm representative... :)

Thanks in advance for your generosity!

For the SquirrelMail Team,

  Paul Lesniewski

There are some corporate bodies who use SquirrelMail to make money for themselves. I know of at least two (and I'm sure there're more) ISPs who use SquirrelMail as the webmail client for their customers. It's perhaps not unreasonable for those corporate bodies to pay for the privilege.

There may be another option. That is, supply SquirrelMail "as is" under the current licence arrangements to all, but create an "added value" service of support and customisation - professional services - to corporate clients for which there would be a charge. Those clients wouldn't pay for the software, they'd pay for a support contract.

X 2 with bells on!!

I avoid PP like the *plague*. Even then it's not always possible...

A bank account is definitely the way to go if it can be arranged. Not
even Google (Checkout) can be trusted but they have *got* to be
better than PP.

Simon,

Please let's not go there.

Open Source is Open Source is free. Don't compromise.

By all means *ask* the ISPs for a contribution but make it voluntary.

How about asking developers to take on paid customisation work and
donate half of the proceeds to the project? This may get *them* more
work and raise money in the process...?

Good idea. As long as the free list doesn't wither and die.

How about you guarantee the 'Sponsors list' a reply within 24h and
help others after that?

Rack the price up on the 'Sponsors list' until the numbers drop
sufficiently to keep the workload down ;-)

Could you 'Auction' solutions...?

Probably not entirely.  :-)  But many of us here would love to avoid
PayPal.  Problem is there aren't any alternatives that seem like
they'd work.  If any one of you knows of a good PayPal alternative, by
all means, please speak up!!

If you want to send money directly to us, then, well, contact us
offlist and ask for our address where you can send an old-school
check.  :-)

Feel free to encourage them to send us financial support, but
otherwise, we can't be in the business of demanding that some who use
SquirrelMail in corporate or large-scale environments have to pay and
others don't.  On the other hand, trying to put more emphasis on a
paid priority support scheme that such businesses might be likely to
join is probably good.  There are probably some other, similar models
in this realm... feel free to contribute ideas if you have them.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at.  We more or less *do* have this now,
in the form of "official support" listed on our commercial support
page, but most people seem to miss this or think they don't need it.
I think in the future, our paid support options need to be made more
prominent, including on the download pages.

So what do you use, then?  We're most definitely open to suggestions,
but I haven't seen any yet.

Direct bank transfers?  When was the last time you completed an online
transfer (or even completed it offline) using this method?  As far as
I can tell, this is not a realistic option, both logistically (& maybe
fiscally) and for privacy concerns for both us and you.

We created a bounty page (currently I think it's offline, but no one
really seemed to take notice of it anyway).  The only thing we need to
do different in the future I think is integrate the notion of paid bug
fixes tighter into our bug tracker.

Right.  But the point we can take from this suggestion is to do what
we can to encourage corporate users of OSS to give back more than they
do (don't).  Ideas in that vein are always welcome.

Right.

Once in a while we get a one-off customization gig, but they aren't
very steady.  The real challenge here is making it obvious that this
is an option and that it's a good way to support the project.  I tried
to allude to that in my announcement as well.  The download page is
probably a good place to start...
