Supporting runtime switching these is awsome from the "coolness" point of view. Helps popping those "wow" in demos, I believe! ;-)
On the other hand, considering implementation is costly and currently experiencing some issues (such as issue 764 [1]), IMHO I'd agree with you and remove them in order to enhance performance and decrease memory usage.
