Hey Van,
You must have a leak somewhere? The 1200 cc Trophies can be ridden
down to maybe 25 MPG, if you are twisting the wick a bunch, but the
smell of raw gasoline, and the drop in mileage together has to be a
leak somewhere, or perhaps a stuck float that is letting the carb
overflow and spill out the float bowl vent. With the Vacuum operated
petcock on these bikes it would only happen when the engine is
running. You can pull off the vacuum hose ( #4 carb top) and suck on
the line to open the flow to the carb, and see if anything dribbles
out of the carbs, or anywhere else.
