I did a quick search on DP review and it seems there are a few other
options:
Canon Powershot SX10 IS (20x)
Canon PowerShot SX1 IS (20x)
Canon PowerShot S5 IS (12x) $259.99 CAD (no power?)
Nikon Coolpix P80 (18x) $299 (lens & shutter)
Only the S5 is on the remote list, and is in my range, but there seems
to be no AC power adaptor available for it?
Any of those other cameras supported by (the newest) gphoto2? (and have
an AC adaptor port?)
