What is the version on firefox that you are using? As per http://osdir.com/ml/kde.akregator.user/2005-12/msg00010.html , simply invoking 'firefox {URL}' works correctly with firefox 1.5 (whether it is already opened or not).

I tried this, and it appears to work for the most part.

Every once in awhile, after I've already closed firefox, I'll get the message 
as a popup.
