It will depend on which poppassd program your password server is running
to change the password. You may need to upgrade the program or change to
a different one or possibly compile a change to the current one. You
didn't say which daemon you were using, so until we know that, we can't
be of much help.
Since the output you listed says 1.6a, I'm going to assume you are using
Pawel Krawczyk's version. That version has been updated to 1.8.5, so I
would suggest getting that first and seeing if it corrects the invalid
output issue. It can be found at

in the README for change_pass).
