http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/NextGenerationSchema and bring in your ideas and opinions. Because it is already more than a possibility that exactly what you describe here becomes reality. Next generation schema aims at massive duplicating to have all releases that were produced in the db while on the other hand providing the means to group them (as well as the tracks). And you are the first one I've heard of so far who thinks this is outside of MB's scope.
well I've always found NGS and the like to be somewhat to abstract a
concept to evaluate fully. It's one proposal that links to a number of
other proposals, all of which add up to...[unknown] :) i've done my
best to read through it again today and put my thoughts regarding an
alternative here -
http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/ReleaseGroupsAlternative - but whether or
not my ideas work alongside what NGS proposes I don't know because I
don't fully understand it.

haha, hmm maybe when my proposal is allowed :)
