Sam tends to be a bit terse in his replies, but since he is the
developer, his answers are (almost) always right. :)

All of my accounts authenticate with the full email address
(user@...), so I don't see a problem with "user.name".
Double-check the settings in your IMAP client, and if you don't see
anything there, try using wireshark to sniff the connection so you can
see exactly what the conversation looks like.
