The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it depends. There  
are basically 2 different sorts of re-chargeable batteries. Expensive  
ones and cheap ones. Expensive ones are rare. My very first Ni-cads  
for my 1st Haselblad were from the same batch that went to the moon.  
They performed as good as new when I sold the camera 27 years later.  
Cheap batteries which are the same size as AAs will usually give a  
slightly lower voltage than Alkalines and the voltage will drop with  
age and use.

The best AA size rechargeable batteries that I have found are made by Sanyo and are called Eneloop, amazing!  Try googling them to find out how to order on the net.
