Unless I misunderstood something, mplayer used to work fine for you with
an older version of the em8300 modules; is that right? What version were
you using?
Such a regression is a bug and should be fixed. Hence, it would be nice
if you could give version 0.17.1 a try, and see if the same problem
occurs. And if it does, it would be nice if you could find the first
release that is broken. With that hint, I might be able to find the root
of the problem, or I will ask you for more tests...
As for the players, I used to be happy with xine, but haven't used it
for years. Nowadays, I only use vdr with its dxr3 plugin. As far as I am
concerned, my spare time hardly permits me to maintain the drivers, I
have no time to work on a player. There's a player that you did not
mentionned, and that you might want to try: dxr3player (see
http://dxr3player.sourceforge.net/ ); note that I haven't tried it.
