OK. I'll try to find the version that broke things with mplayer. To
eliminate the need of going to older kernels I'll focus on the freezes
(mplayer had more "minor" issues with the em8300 modules I had, such as
a/v sync issues, choppy video playback from time to time, etc).

dxr3player is super, and at least from the few tests I made by far the
best (no playback issues at all), however it cannot play individual
video files, only whole dvds and only interactively (cannot be told to
bypass the menus and play directly a title).

Vdr has its own plug-in or it uses xine/mplayer to do the job? The only
thing I found when I was searching was something about an external
player (xine/mplayer) to handle the job, and therefore I abandoned the
idea and gone directly to xine/mplayer. Have I lost something?
