Hi udiggers,

here comes the rest of my observations concerning the translations:

4.
src\net\refractions\udig\project\internal\commands\messages.properties
in net.refractions.udig.project
seems to be superfluous. Its ohly text refers to a command which has obviously be renamed to "SetScaleCommand" and gets its text from another message bundle.

5.
In org.tcat.citd.sim.udig.bookmarks
several action IDs have been stored as translatable text in the resource bundle.
This is nonsense. Translating them would stop the plugin from working.

6.
DirectoryFieldEditor
calls a method JFaceResources.getString("openBrowse") which returns "Browse...", but is not translated to German.

7.
In UDig 1.2M8, which I downloaded today in order to check it, the help center and Eclipse based UI is not translated.
Looks like this is a stubborn issue re-occurring in every release...

Anyway, in my IDE I had to manually add all the required fragments from the Babel project to the plugin list of the launch configuration in order to get a fully localized UDig.

8.
The dropins\nl-hack folder (required according to the dev. guide) looks like a bad idea.
I now have nl_de AND nl1 fragments for several plugins in my target platform.
Of course, only one of each can be selected. Moreover the "old" plugins in this folder are outdated. They were from Eclipse 3.2!
I believe that the Babel project makes them redundant.
Opinions?

9.
Although I have been careful only to modify the German properties files, I had to do some externalization of Strings for actions, operations, buttons and (most often) export dialogs that were missed up to now.
I will commit all the changes once I feel I have checked (almost) the whole UI and feel comfortable with it.

10.
What is this "Make hole" operation supposed to do. When I click on it (on a shapefile layer) nothing happens. The Javadoc tells something technical without stating what the user can actually achieve with it.
"Make hole" sounds like some hole cutter tool placed at the wrong location in the UI, but likely it is something different.

11.
In the new layer wizard, when choosing DB2 and "Next" I get an error
"An error occurred during page transition.  This is most likely a programming error.  Please report it."
Which I have done herewith ... and I have externalized the message.
Afterwards the dialog becomes unusable and only throws NPEs at every possibility :-(

12.
In a raster layer's style editor in the pages "Simple" and "Simple Raster",
the label for "Max scale" is not large enough for the German text.
Looks ugly, but it's only a cosmetical issue.
Shouldn't the labels adapt their size to content?

When you have some time ;-), please go over these points and fix them.
Should I create a JIRA for them? Or one for each?

Hi Matthias,
thank you very much for the great report.

Udiggers, I propose to setup an IRC meeting to
1) get together again in an organised manner :)
2) talk about 1.2-M8 ad future release candidate
3) quickly go through the list of things Matthias put together and
solve those that are easily solvable and create JIRA for the others

What about Thursday? What time? Who will attend? For me 4 in the
Italian morning seems to be good also :)

Ciao
Andrea

There is more :-)

> Looks like this is a stubborn issue re-occurring in every release...

Thinking that is two issues:
- the eclipse base; we do include a base translation that moovida made
in our extras download; I am not sure if it is being included in the
sample application correctly...
- the help center; I will export out all the different wiki spaces and
check they are available.

> Anyway, in my IDE I had to manually add all the required fragments from the Babel project to the plugin list of the launch configuration in order to get a fully localized UDig.

Okay - switching to the babel project would be great (is it ready? and
could you provide us the list of fragments).

If you are happy with the babel project then it is time to switch; I
tried 2 years ago but it was not very good yet.

Nice

I am not sure myself.

Good point; I think there is a JFace label we can use that is willing
to "shorten" itself depending on available room.

May as well create one JIRA issue for all of these and we can break
out sub tasks if needed.

You remember which was the time best for all of us? :) I do not.
There was a 21.00 Italy which is 7.00 Sydney.
Or we could do 9.00 Italy which is 19.00 Sydney.

Which one do you prefer?

I'll try to respond inline because I am not a big fan of IRC in general, and definitely not at 4 o'clock in the morning. ;-)

Ah, don't get me wrong: The help contents is fine, its only the UI that is missing translations. And this one is lacking translations for the same reason as the Eclipse base, if I am not mistaken.

> Okay - switching to the babel project would be great (is it ready?

Imho it is perfectly usable. The only caveat is that it provides language packs for every language separately ... so there will be lots of fragments in the final product. But I don't think this matters.

> and could you provide us the list of fragments).

It is attached as image (german_fragments_eclipse35.png). Sorry but I am not going to transcribe the names of 50+ fragments from the launch config.

Note: I've checked only fragments for the org.eclipse.xxx namespace, I am not sure if fragments for its dependencies (e.g. org.apache.xxx) are needed. The UI looks fine without them.

P.S: I'd be glad If I could tell the launch configuration to add "all fragments for selected plugins", instead of checking each fragment manually. If anybody knows a trick, let me know.

I am indeed happy, but cannot speak for other languages than German of course. But looking on the translation progress for Spanish, Italian and Korean for the Eclipse core packages gives ~90% coverage as well. Should be fine.

I understand; I have been missing all my 2am osgeo meetings :-)

(whew!) So that is one less thing to do then; we should focus on
transitioning to babel.

> Imho it is perfectly usable. The only caveat is that it provides language packs for every language separately ... so there will be lots of fragments in the final product. But I don't think this matters.

The thing that got me when I tried last time was that the language
packs were massive; I wanted just the RCP base translated rather then
all of eclipse.

That should be fine; the fragment presentation would be new since I
last looked at babel.

Great; it will be good to drop our own "nl" fragment then.

Okay so I better sort out some tasks that are needed before release;
thanks very much for the testing and direction.

I don't think they offer a RCP part only, but given that the
BabelLanguagePack-eclipse-de_3.5.0.v20090620043401.zip
(which covers all we need, as far as I can tell) is 1MB only, size doesn't seem like a concern for me. It's only bunch of words, after all...

Download is here, btw:
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/babel/babel_language_packs/galileo.php

But anyway, maybe you want to consider offering "language packs" separately to the "English only" UDig version, if download size for the English only users really is a concern. Of course, in this case the "language packs" would need some simple installation guide for the not so Eclipse experienced end users.
Or the intro page (in UDig 1.3) could start an automatic download and/or installation of selected language packs, if this is possible.

Just thinking loud.
