I'm uncertain about the cause of the exception from GL 1.7, but I'd recommend moving up to the latest nightly build, which has no problems with the PIeChartExample. It can be found here:

I tried changing the code in the main function that modifies the original
"idols" list to using the "swingEDTIdolsList" and still same issue..
