From the Gwenview RPM summary:
"Gwenview also provides image and directory KParts components
for use e.g. in Konqueror."

What you got in KDE3 is functionality for Konqueror so that
when you select/view image files an embedded Gwenview
viewer is used by default, which provides:
(1) Appropriate resizing;
(2) Next and previous buttons appear automatically in the toolbar
to allow you to move among images;
(3) A Colors entry appears under the View menu, which allows you
to adjust gamma, etc.

Looking a bit further now, I see that an embedded Gwenview viewer
is being used in Konqueror in KDE4, but it lacks features (2) and (3) above.
So unfortunately, Konqueror in KDE4 is pretty useless for dealing with
directories of images.  This appears to be a regression in the KParts
elements of Gwneview for KDE4.

The kipi-plugins packge is also installed, BTW, but it has nothing
to do with what I was talking about.
