How common is this common practice? :)
For me ~/.config has subdirectories like MusE, Mysoft, Pencil, QSvn,
Qtpfsgui, RawTherapee, Trolltech and Undertype. I also happen to have
~/.FontForge, ~/.Fontmatrix, ~/.GTKRawGallery, ~/.Skype etc.
